Updates from the Chromosome 18 Clinical Research Center

  • Last month, the Registry and the Chromosome 18 Clinical Research Center celebrated a big success in securing new grant funding to advance critical chromosome 18 research. The Kronkosky Foundation in San Antonio awarded an incredible $85,000 grant to support the CRC’s groundbreaking Seizure Study, helping move us closer to better treatments and improved care for individuals living with chromosome 18 conditions who suffer from seizures and epilepsy. In addition, the CRC was honored to receive its first ever grant from the Earl C. Sams Foundation in Corpus Christi, Texas, with $5,000 awarded to support the Bone Density Study. We are deeply encouraged by the growing support from Texas foundations that recognize the life changing impact of the research taking place at the CRC.
  • Is your family planning to come to the Annual Family Conference in San Antonio this summer? We will be doing blood draws at Conference for those who want to enroll in the Clinical Research Center study. If you are interested in enrolling and completing your blood draws at this year's Conference, please reach out to chromosome18@uthscsa.edu as there are steps you will need to complete prior to coming to Conference.

This month, Dr. Cody shares an article discussing the connection between the brain and lifestyle. Please enjoy the article below:

Changing Your Brain

Diet and exercise are important for healthy living. Yea, yea yea, we have all heard that a thousand times, beginning with our parents telling us this. But what does that really mean? For people with chromosome 18 conditions, it is particularly critical because optimizing their skills and ability to be as independent as possible is a top priority. There are a lot of ways to optimize this that come under the heading of lifestyle. Here is what that means as far as what is really going on in the brain and how lifestyle choices can impact it. The brain is actually a very dynamic organ. Even after someone reaches adulthood, the brain continues to have the ability to adapt, react, and change in positive ways. This is called neural plasticity... Click HERE to read the full article.
