Changing the World One Child at a Time

Today, I am thankful. The words of a praise song have been in my mind:

Give thanks with a grateful heart;

give thanks to the Holy One;

give thanks because we’re given Jesus Christ, the Son.

And now let the weak say, “We are strong;"

let the poor say, “We are rich because

of what the Lord has done for us!”

Give thanks. Give thanks.

As I raked leaves on this day with blue skies, I thought about what women of the Columbia-Willamette Women of Vision Chapter accomplished in FY21. I was humbled and grateful for all you have and are doing to express your love for Christ. I see it through your commitment to give, learn, and act in ways that help bring life in all its fullness to families living in extreme poverty.

I see it too in your generous financial giving, in your prayer support, and in your actions of help for those in need in the Portland area. I'm grateful for your willingness to learn more about uncomfortable issues like FGM (female genital mutilation) or the complicated, long-term refugee situation for Syrians and the issues of poverty that impact our neighbors in Honduras. In all these ways and more you continue to demonstrate that you understand God’s call to follow Christ into the marginalized and forgotten places where the poor live. Thank you.

Sometimes stories of world news can trigger questions of whether giving to Women of Vision really makes a difference in problems of poverty. Our chapter’s focused giving to three World Vision projects, means we receive annual reports of the work accomplished. Here are just a few examples of the life, hope and a future that we have supported:

•    In just one year, 57,303 Syrian children were reached with health and nutrition services through mobile medical units, health care centers, maternity services, and WASH interventions that improved access to clean water and sanitation. These interventions bring promise of life rather than fears of sickness or death.

•    In the first half of FY21 in the Kenya Big Dream project, 437 children graduated from alternative rites of passage ceremonies and more than 42 circumcisers abandoned their tools and embraced change. There is hope in these communities that girls will now have full lives.

•    In the first half of FY21 in Honduras, 32 grain banks were established that will ensure food security in times of hurricanes and other disasters, and 135 youth were trained to share their faith and a message of peace over violence with their peers. These all point to promise for a positive future for children and families.

Thank you for helping to bring life in all its fullness to Syrian refugees, girls in Kenya, and children and families of Honduras. Thank you for reaching out to the poor with CWWOV as one way to express thanks to God for his grace to you. May your Thanksgiving and Advent be filled to overflowing with God’s love.

Blessings,

Ruth Nottingham

Kenya Big Dream Project Communication and Conversation

A group gathered (by Zoom) on November 13th for an update and conversation about the tough issues World Vision is addressing in the Kenya Big Dream project. Female genital mutilation and child marriage are stealing future dreams from millions of girls in Kenya—but not for long! If you missed it, please take a look at this recording. You'll see we had a special guest drop by!
