Chaotic Mayhem

Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia. Goran Tomic’s collages are a manifestation of the chaotic mayhem of modern life in a big city. Tomic writes, “The latest series of collages was constructed when my immediate living environment changed from a wonderful old house with a large workshop to an apartment block existence. With hardly any space or storage, I had to downsize my work to smaller-sized cardboard, manila envelopes, and various second-hand children’s and nature book covers. The idea was that they could fit into a folder in a carry bag/satchel and be worked on wherever I was.”

COLLAGE ON VIEW

Pluri-identiats/KRAK

at the Museum of the University of Alicante in San Vicente del Raspeig, Spain through 13 July 2025. In the 4th Pluri-Identitats Visual Arts Contest, art becomes a tool to combat discrimination, prejudice, stereotypes and stigma, a vehicle for social transformation. These projects are concerned with gender identity, sexual diversity and affective-sexual orientation, but also with multiculturalism, digital identity or the differently abled, as a meeting point where everyone is on an equal footing. "Pluri-identitats" encourages minorities to make their voices heard, promoting inclusion and diversity, respect and freedom. READ MORE

Authoritarian Regime Survival Guide

The book combines the text of a Polish human rights activist with the artwork of seven collage artists to create a space in which we can think about the rise of authoritarianism and how to navigate the troubling, difficult times in which we find ourselves. Organized as a series of lists, the book illustrates what to expect under authoritarianism and offers rules for surviving authoritarian regimes and engaging their supporters. The introduction traces how the text came into existence and how the artists came together to make collage about it. Ric Kasini Kadour shares historical examples of artists responding to authoritarianism; John Heartfield's anti-fascist collage and a 1979 exhibition in East Germany that was described as a "victory over false consciousness." The Guide will be launched at a Kolaj LIVE Online event on Saturday, 26 July 2025 at 3PM EDT. On hand will be the artists, Martin Mycielski, and Kolaj Institute Director, Ric Kasini Kadour. READ MORE

CALL TO ARTISTS

Collage in Practice

Starts 20 July 2025. Apply Today. The practice of collage takes on many forms and is shaped by the artist’s goals and what they want to achieve with their artwork, how they want to diffuse their artwork in the broader ecosystem of art. The Collage in Practice Workshop is designed to give artists a working understanding of artist practice and how this understanding informs approaches to professional and artistic development. Participants will explore critical concepts and collage taxonomies as a way to develop and refine the language they use to talk about their own practice and to develop a broad view of the creative landscape in which they operate. Participants will finish the workshop with a deeper understanding of their practice; a strong statement of practice that can be used to communicate with curators, editors, and art professionals; a portfolio of artwork (or a plan to make one); and tools for growing or developing their practice. Recontextualization

Brooklyn, New York, USA. Daphne Silbiger considers character and scene in their collage work, and is interested in the medium’s principle of recontextualization as a method of storytelling. They are interested in the viewer’s experience of creating connections within a work, and rely on strategic relationship-building between “subjects” (i.e. collaged images) to suggest active theatrical effects like gesture and intention. Silbiger works exclusively with found paper materials, and creates many of their works using a single source like a magazine or book to try and tease out the gestalt meaning of that source–or, to isolate and investigate concepts such as obedience, mechanization, and dance. Fragmentary Forms

In Kolaj #41, we review Freya Gowrley’s new history of collage, Fragmentary Forms. Gowrley wrote, “In this book, collage is neither a medium nor genre, but a mode; a means of processing the world as it was encountered by individuals across cultures and geographies.” In his review, Ric Kasini Kadour wrote, "The history of collage comes with a series of problems...Gowrley confronts this challenge head on and tackles it brilliantly."
