Ascension Day Online @ESC
by The Rev. Cameron Randle, Rector

For folks who have never attended a service in our small chapel (located within the Parish Day School quarters) or who may be unfamiliar with those services comprising the Daily Office in the Book of Common Prayer, tomorrow’s virtual observance of Ascension Day may be of special interest. Between now and then, you will receive via email a link to our recorded Ascension Day Compline service on YouTube.

This year’s commemoration of the ascension of Our Lord to his heavenly throne will be observed in the format of Compline, the last of the Anglican daily prayer services, after Morning Prayer, Noonday Prayer and Evening Prayer. Compline offers a candlelit and contemplative conclusion to each day. Our Ascension Day Compline Service will include guest musicians as well as a spoken liturgy. No communion or sermon is included.

This coming Sunday marks the Seventh Sunday in the liturgical season of Easter. We are about to transition through Pentecost and into the extended period following, known as Ordinary Time. Has there ever been a more ironic term, given our present circumstances?! Regardless, we are privileged to stop for a moment and wonder at the Ascension of Our Lord, whose life and work on earth was fulfilled and brought to completion.

This juncture in the church calendar year honors an extraordinary occasion. May we remember that we are ALL overcomers; we, too, are called to complete our ministries with gratitude, faithfulness, diligence, integrity and, sometimes, patience and humor.

“The Lord Almighty Grant us a peaceful night and a perfect end. Amen.”
Chapel Pantry update

The Chapel Pantry's Saturday drive through grocery distributions are going very well. 246 families were served on Saturday! The Pantry has served 1,389 families in six weeks of service. Everyone is deeply grateful for our help and we are equally grateful for yours.

Here are some highlights from the week:
  • The Chapel Pantry received a grant of $2,500 from the Priority Toyota Charity Bowl fund.
  • A neighborhood birthday drive by food drive brought in four carloads of food for the Pantry!
  • The Pantry received a $500 grant from the WaWa Foundation.
  • Ordering from the Foodbank is beginning to be available in limited selection and quantity. This is the first sign of improvement in the food supply chain.

Our current needs:
  • Disinfectant wipes such as Clorox or Lysol wipes, hand sanitizer (just for Pantry use)

Shopping List (regular sizes, please):

Music for the Seventh Sunday of Easter

With words in Sunday's Gospel, John 17:11, Jesus prays, “Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that the may be one, as we are one. The hymn “We are all one in mission” urges us to strive for Christian Unity. This hymn is found in Wonder Love and Praise # 778, We are all one in mission

Although the anthem “Draw us in the Spirit’s tether” by Harold Friedell, does not quote today’s scripture. The text urges us to gather in Christ’s name and serve the world as new disciples. This is one of the favorite selections sung by the ESC choir. The last time we sang this music was for the Consecration of our new Bishop Haynes. The choir numbered more than 200 singers. Listen here to this anthem. Text of the anthem:

Draw us in the Spirit's tether, for when humbly in your name two or three are met together, you are in the midst of them. Alleluia! Alleluia! Touch we now your garment's hem. As disciples used to gather in the name of Christ to sup, then with thanks to God the giver, break the bread and bless the cup. Alleluia! Alleluia! so now bind our friendship up. All our meals and all our living make as sacraments of you, that by caring, helping, giving, we may be disciples true. Alleluia! Alleluia! We will serve with faith anew.

Blessings to all,
Martin
Help the Parish Book Store provide books for the Latino children on the Eastern Shore

The Parish Book Store is conducting a Spring & Summer Book Drive for Latino children and youth on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The campaign will extend through June 15. Many selections will be bilingual. We are seeking sponsorship of individual books, ranging in cost from $4.00-$15.00, for young readers of all ages up through 12 th grade. With monies collected from our sponsors, the Shore-based nonprofit Dos Santos will distribute books to families in need via the organization’s three food pantry distribution sites in Eastville, Pungoteague and Parksley, VA.

Donors are asked to contribute financially by making checks payable to Parish Book Store with Dos Santos on the memo line. Please send financial donations to: Parish Book Store, 2020 Laskin Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23451. Due to limitations imposed by COVID-19 precautions, the Book Store staff will select all titles to be purchased for distribution to the children of migrant workers, agricultural workers, poultry workers and other members of the ESVA Latino immigrant community.

Pray for our military

From the Cru Military Ministry -- PRAY against the spirit of suicide for service members and their families who may be feeling a sense of hopelessness and despair. Pray that they would release the weight of their burdens and weariness to God to allow Him to bring them into a place of rest and peace. In His presence, He offers restoration with His healing love, comfort and peace!

Prayers & Prayer Cards for deployed military
If you would like a prayer card sent to your deployed service member please contact Bill Hunter at [email protected] or 757-402-6384. I would also be happy to place the service member on the prayer list at church for inclusion in the weekly Prayers of the People.
