Seminarian to Join ESC Staff

We are very pleased to announce that seminarian Anne Zobel will be joining us for the next two years as a part of her professional Field Education placement. Anne has been assigned to us by Bishop Haynes for ministry development and mentorship. She will be incorporated into the ESC community starting in the Fall of 2021.

Anne and her husband Dave met and were married at Eastern Shore Chapel and she is thrilled to get to reconnect with her former faith family at ESC. Anne is in the process of completing her first year of graduate studies at Bexley Seabury Seminary in Chicago, IL. Bexley Seabury offers a hybrid method of seminary education with a blend of online coursework interspersed with weekends in Chicago. (The Rev. Melody Perdue is a recent graduate of Bexley Seabury.)

Anne is pursuing a new model of ministry called the bi-vocational priesthood. God willing, she hopes to continue in her private practice as an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) while serving parishes that may not be able to afford a full-time rector. Her work at ESC will be supervised by The Rev. Cameron Randle.

Welcome Anne!
Children's Book Week (May 3-9 and November 8-14) calls for a new book for the children in your life

What better book for children living in a seaside town than The Sea Book by Charlotte Milner? Featuring fascinating fishy facts with bright, bold illustrations, this book will take children on a trip through the sea to learn about marine animals and their habitats, as well as the impact of climate change and pollution on our seas. The author is a London-based writer, designer and illustrator.

The Sea Book is available at the Parish Book Store, open at 11:30 AM on Sundays, 10 AM to 2 PM Mondays and Wednesdays, and 9 AM to 11 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Or call 757-425-0114 to make an appointment at your convenience. Or order from bookshop.org/shop/parishbookstore for delivery to your home.
Altar Flower Donations Now Accepted

Beautiful fresh flower arrangements are beginning to return to our altar, with thanks to the ESC Flower Guild. If you would like to honor someone special by making a contribution for Altar Flowers for a certain Sunday, the suggested donation for Altar Flowers is $100.

Please send your check to the attention of Roxanne Wright (payable to ESC with "Altar Flowers" in the memo section and a note indicating "in honor of"/"in thanksgiving for"/ or "in memory of") for those you wish to remember. Please include the Sunday date for your honorarium so that it may be printed properly in the Sunday bulletin.

Thank you.
Delaney Brown Senior Recital at ESC May 30

Hello ESC! For those of you who are not familiar with me, my name is Delaney Brown and I have been a violinist for 14 years. I have played in various services over the course of my time at ESC and I have decided that before I go off to college, I would like to showcase some of my more complex works for the parish that has been such a large part of my life. I am going to have a Senior Recital on May 30 at 3 pm in the Church Sanctuary. If you would like to come please R.S.V.P. with Laurie Fox. The registration is just a precaution like the recent Sunday Services. I will play several solos and pieces accompanied by Holly Sunderland as well as a duet with my violin teacher, Megan Van Gomple. I love playing in the church and I love playing for you all! I hope you consider coming!
First Friday Men’s Breakfast CELEBRATION!

Join us Friday, May 7 at 7:30 as we regather in person and celebrate our Crystal Anniversary! We will meet in person, live, in the Parish Hall, the scene of our very first meeting back on Friday, May 5, 2006. Fresh hot coffee will be provided (in environmentally friendly paper cups, not crystal) with sausage or ham biscuits for your morning dining pleasure! You won’t want to miss this. We will chat about our regathering plans, all that’s going on at Eastern Shore Chapel, and we will discuss the lectionary readings for Sunday, May 9. (Click here for the readings.) We will practice proper social distancing and wear masks when not eating. We will also be available for you on ZOOM (Click here to join) if you are more comfortable with that. (No coffee and biscuits available on ZOOM) It’s been a great run with lots more to follow. We have ZOOMed through the virus; now let’s move ahead together. Join us won’t you? We will all be made richer by your presence.
Chapel Pantry Update
By Kay O'Reilly, Chapel Pantry Coordinator

The Pantry served 340 households on Saturday and 92 individuals on the Mercy Chef Monday distribution. With stimulus checks arriving and many folks returning to full employment, we’ve seen a reduction in the number of households we’re serving, which is a welcome change from our peak of 485 households on March 6.

Our church considers Dos Santos Food Pantry on the Eastern Shore of Virginia to be a sister food pantry to ours. So we were so pleased to make a trek there on Monday to bring a van full of donated school supplies, workbooks, toys, blankets, and sewing supplies, along with 20 cases of black beans, 20 cases of rice and shelf stable milk, and a check to help fund the Dos Santos pantry mission. It’s wonderful to able to share our abundance; thanks be to God!

The Chapel Pantry is also assisting FEMA to get people signed up to get vaccinated against COVID-19. FEMA staff will be walking the car line with tablet computers to encourage people to schedule appointments while they wait and to answer any questions folks may have.

Parents and teens, as school winds down remember the pantry is always in need of volunteers! We need help on Thursdays from 12-4, Fridays from 1 to 4:30 and Saturdays from 11:30 to 3. Call or text Kay O’Reilly at 757-323-7495 to volunteer.
The Organ Swell at ESC

Organists Martin Sunderland, Holly Sunderland, and clarinetist Michael Byerly performed one of the Organ Swell Concerts at Eastern Shore Chapel on May 2. There are two links, one for the concert, the other for the written program. Please enjoy!

Over 7000 Memorial Flags to be placed this year

Shortly after 9/11, ESC decided to honor the war casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq by placing flags on the front lawn of the church from Memorial Day through July 4th of each year. This tradition has continued annually with now 7038 flags to be placed in 2021. This year a Memorial Service will be conducted in front of the church on Sunday, May 30, following the regularly scheduled church service in order to read and memorialize those honored dead since 2019. That same day flags will start to be placed on the front lawn. Save that date. There will be sign ups posted online in future articles.

Parish Day School students enjoying warm weather!

The warm weather brings outdoor joy and excitement for our preschoolers.
Children are using their investigation skills to find inchworms, ladybugs, and butterflies on our playground. Teachers are bringing many of their inside activities to the outdoors so that they can enjoy the weather. Our classrooms are getting inspiration from nature to create their indoor masterpieces. It is such a fun time of year to be in preschool!

We continue to prepare for Camp Turtle Trap and are hiring for the upcoming summer and school year. If you are interested in joining the Camp Turtle Trap Team, please email your resume to [email protected], or to be considered for the 2021-2022 school year email your resume to [email protected].

Volunteers are needed to assist on Friday late afternoon and early evening or on Saturday morning depending on which team you’re on. If you are interested in joining our dynamic Lawn Crew team, please contact Rod Gilmour by calling 757-613-0448 or email at [email protected]. Please consider sharing your time and talent by joining this important ministry!
