Introducing CATCH: A New Pathway to Independence at CHSC

We are pleased to announce the launch of CATCH: Connecting Adults to Chapel Haven, a one‑year residential program designed for mid‑life and older adults who are ready to explore greater independence.

CATCH is ideal for adults age 30-ish+ with intellectual or developmental disabilities who are emotionally and behaviorally stable, able to manage basic daily living skills, and motivated to grow.

CATCH provides participants with a campus apartment and 24/7 staff access, along with up to 20 hours of weekly classes, recreation, and activities. Each participant also receives up to 10 hours of individualized coaching in essential skills such as budgeting, cooking, transportation, and social engagement. Vocational supports are available through CareerAbility, and participants may also explore our Community Life Program. Regular progress meetings help track goals and celebrate achievements. At the end of the one‑year experience, individuals may transition into one of CHSC’s lifelong residential options, including Supported Living, Community Outreach Services, or SAIL.

Families interested in learning more or beginning the admissions process may contact our team at admission@chapelhaven.org or 203‑397‑1714 ext. 185.

CHAMP Committee explores how assistive technology tools can make tasks easier

CHAMP Committee purchases assistive tech tools to make day-to-day tasks easier

Using funds raised through the Great Give, the CHAMP committee has purchased a range of innovative assistive tech tools for every-day tasks.

The tools range from kitchen items like an assistive cutting board, vegetable chopper and adaptive utensils to NFC (small wireless data chips that can be used for mobile payments and other conveniences). The new items also include air tags to make navigating the community easier, a folding board for neatly storing laundered items and more.

The tools were introduced to staff at an all-agency training and the committee is exploring making the tools available more broadly to students.

During the all-agency meeting, ASAT Special Education Teacher Ellen Stansfield, a member of CHAMP, and CHSC community member Gillian, demonstrated how the tools can make life easier in the kitchen.

The tools include knives that can cut with a rocking motion, an adaptive cutting board with a safe-to-use mandolin, grips that make it easier to open jars and more.

See a video below as the pair demonstrate how to use the new tools. Questions? Contact Sarah Elsdon

Community member James

takes action during emergency

We are proud to recognize James Trimble for his quick thinking and compassionate response during an emergency last month.

While shopping at a crowded Stop & Shop in East Haven, James heard a woman scream and saw that she had fallen and appeared to be experiencing a medical issue. With bystanders unsure of what to do, James immediately stepped forward, stayed calm, and called 911 — clearly explaining the situation to the operator and ensuring help arrived quickly.

First responders from the East Haven Fire Department soon reached the scene and were able to assist the woman. Store staff and customers praised James for his decisive actions, noting that his willingness to “see something, say something” may have prevented a far more serious outcome.

James credits Chapel Haven’s community safety training for preparing him to respond with confidence. As he shared, “Community safety doesn’t just happen here in New Haven — it happens everywhere. If we all do our part to help others and SEE SOMETHING- SAY SOMETHING, the world will be a lot safer.”

We couldn’t agree more! Congratulations, James, on putting your skills into action and making a real difference. We are proud of you!

CHFA Conversations: A great way to meet and hear from other CHSC parents! Next one is 4/22

CHFA Community Conversations debuts on Zoom!

The Chapel Haven Family Association (CHFA) has begun a new program called CHFA Community Conversations. This new online series supports our families as they navigate the many stages of their loved one's journey toward independence.

Our first online session in February was entitled "Transitioning into the Community" and featured CHSC parents Rick Sugam and Holly Weston sharing their experiences as their sons - Dan and Zach, respectively - graduated the residential program and moved into the community. It was well attended and lots of questions were addressed.

Mark your calendars for Weds., April 22, 6-7 p.m. for the next session, “Health - Considerations for Families." All three panelists are CHSC parents and bring a wealth of expertise to the topic. Panelists will be Dr. Karen Gardner (top photo, Internal Medicine, MD, CHSC Board Member and parent), Dr. John Bilezikian (middle photo, endocrinologist and parent) and Gina Youngman (bottom photo, palliative care nurse practitioner and parent). Topics will include sensitive reproductive decisions, health screenings and general nutrition. Upon registering, please provide questions ahead of time to make the most out of the session.

Milestones and Moments - Celebrating Achievements

Celebrating Todd K. for Academic Excellence

We are delighted to share that ASAT community member Todd K. has earned a place on the Dean’s List for the Fall 2025 semester at Gateway Community College — a wonderful achievement that reflects his hard work and dedication.

Todd shared, "I’m majoring in Environmental Science and Toxicology which requires taking classes in areas such as Chemistry, Math, Earth Sciences and Natural Disasters. It’s an important area in science since protecting our environment is critical to our future."

Love is in the Air: Married Couples hits the airwaves with story of love

Chapel Haven Schleifer Center (CHSC) is home to five married couples—all adults with a range of developmental and social disabilities—who are thriving in relationships built on love, independence, and community support.

In a world where adults with disabilities are often underestimated or overlooked when it comes to dating, marriage, and long‑term partnership, these couples are living proof that love has no limits.

One couple, Rich and Kim Lamanna, met at CHSC, work for the nonprofit and have been married for 22 years!

For Valentine's Day, two local news stations came to campus to find out the secret to Rich and Kim and their happy union. The reporters also interviewed Michael Storz, President, whose message was: “Our adults want a life no differently than any of us. And they have the absolute ability and capability to have a life of love and friendships and and fulfilled their dreams with the adequate support and education.”
