"It’s Baaaaack!"
Woohoo! Today is Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Tuesday. It is also the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the season of Lent. Around the world, people will enjoy a final round of favorite foods and small indulgences, knowing that when Lent begins tomorrow, a more reflective rhythm takes over until Easter.
For many in North and South America, Lent means giving something up. It also means that meat is traditionally avoided on Fridays, making room for fish sandwiches, hearty salads, fresh fruit, and other creative alternatives.
Yes, some of us still have flashbacks to soybean burgers and square slices of cheese pizza. But take heart. The world has progressed quite a bit over the last forty or fifty years. There are now some genuinely enjoyable options available. We can talk more about that on Friday.
Friday? Yes. That will be the third day of Lent and the third day of our Daily Lenten Devotions. Beginning tomorrow, on Ash Wednesday, you can receive your own copy of the Daily Devotion written by yours truly to help guide and encourage you throughout the season.
Is there more? Absolutely. This year includes several meaningful opportunities for participation, and, like previous years, the daily calendars and challenges will be released on Ash Wednesday. Do not worry. Participation will be engaging and meaningful. For now, let us focus on the Daily Devotions.
You may receive the devotions by email (sending your request to revbrock@longboatislandchapel.org), on Facebook, or by visiting the Chapel website (longboatislandchapel.org). Devotions will be released each morning at 7:00 am.
By the way, we won’t host an Ash Wednesday worship service this year at the Chapel. However, you may come to receive ashes on Wednesday, February 18, from 11:00 am to 11:30 am at the Chapel and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Lord’s Warehouse Thrift Store.
Enjoy your Fat Tuesday and get ready. It’s baaaaack!
God bless,
Brock
