“Something Else This Way Comes”
That title sounds a bit like a combination of an Old Testament proverb, something Master Yoda might say, or maybe a 1962 fantasy novel that eventually became a feature film.
I like it. Not the book or movie, but the thought, “Something Else This Way Comes.”
The statement has all kinds of implications, and since we’re thinking a little bit about God, I’d like to jump on this opportunity. Something else is coming, and it’s not bad.
Sometimes, the lull in life is a time of pause. We need the pause. Sometimes, we need to do nothing more than take a deep breath, hydrate properly, and sleep well.
Other times, a lull in life is a time of rejuvenation. Following tough situations, emotional events, and stressful happenings, we expend more energy than we think. In these cases, it’s good to recognize that we’ve been drained. We need to rebuild. We need to get things back in gear, rediscover some joy, and capitalize on the opportunities ahead.
Then, there are times when a lull in life is a time of preparation. It means that something else is coming, but unless we’re prepared, we could miss it. There are plenty of times in life when a perfect opportunity arises, but we aren't prepared and miss it.
That happened to me recently. Oh, I try to stay ready. I try to stay prepared. But in this particular circumstance, I had a great opportunity to make a big first impression in a situation that could have been positive for the Chapel and myself.
Don’t worry. I didn’t blow it completely. There will be more opportunities regarding this situation, but that certain moment is gone forever.
Over the years, I’ve encountered lots of moments that I missed. Nothing intentional. Nothing bad. But the results could have been much better. However, I will say this: I’ve probably “hit” more of these moments than I’ve missed.
I think the key to a lull in life is to stay on your toes. Be ready to move, act, shift, or change when called upon. Focusing on health, whether physical, mental, financial, etc., helps a lot. But the biggest help is our relationship with God. When that piece of our lives is in good shape, everything else has a stronger foundation. This seems like an obvious statement coming from a pastor, but a brick house built on a solid foundation isn’t easily blown over by a menacing wolf or an unpleasant storm.
Something else this way comes. Just as that’s true in your life and mine, it’s also true at the Chapel. We don’t know exactly what’s coming next, and maybe we’re not supposed to know.
So, take a breath. Eat and hydrate well. Talk to God as much as possible. Rest when you need to rest. Rejuvenate when you need to rejuvenate. But stay on your toes.
A lull doesn’t necessarily mean nothing is happening. Sometimes, it means God is giving us time to get ready for whatever happens next.
Something else this way comes. Let’s be ready!
See you Sunday! God Bless, Brock
