The Chapeline

July 9, 2024

From Our Music Director

Maurice Overholt

As Pastor Brock shared this past Sunday, I am stepping down as Music Director and my last Sunday with the Chapel will be August 4. Life has become very full for Beth and me, which has led us to this difficult decision.

Over the years our Longboat Key has weathered many storms yet still remains a place of beauty and rest. In much the same way, the Longboat Island Chapel has passed the test of time and continues to be a place of refuge and love. As Beth and I have reflected on our 3 1/2 years at the Chapel, we have found the same things to be true.

God brought us to Longboat Island Chapel when Beth and I were in a time of transition. We had never heard of the Chapel when a man with a southern accent called me and said, "I got your name from someone who heard it from someone that you might be available to be a pianist. Are you interested?" And here we are.

I can easily say that Rev. Brock is one of the best pastors I have ever worked with. His care for people, coupled with his strong leadership skills, make him a true gift to the Chapel. And when it comes to music and the arts, Pastor Brock creates the best possible environment for musicians and artists to flourish, which has enabled me to build what is a stable music program at the Chapel.

COVID-19 hit Longboat Island Chapel hard both in culture and the arts. A long pause in singing for the betterment of the congregation brought The Chapel Choir and congregational singing to a full stop. Through God's grace singing returned and we began rebuilding the The Chapel Choir to its current strength of 10-12 committed and passionate singers. And thanks to your generous support, we have also been able to bring in professional musicians from the Sarasota Orchestra and surrounding area.

Two of those musicians are Alyssa Adamson and Cynthia Nash-Frye, who will be serving Longboat Island Chapel moving forward as the Interim Worship Director and Music Coordinator, respectively.

The Chapel has been a place of healing and restoration for Beth and me and our family, and I know the Chapel will continue to serve the Longboat Key community in the same way for many years to come. Thank you for the privilege of leading you in music and worship.

Blessings,

Maurice & Beth Overholt

Revival Committee Needs YOU!

Revival is community outreach. It's making our community aware of who we are. Our goal is to be a presence on the island and show our joy in serving God.

We host wonderful, fun events. We’re not just about Christmas in the Garden, which is pure joy. We have the Blessing of the Animals in October, lunch for our First Responders during the summer months, Arts in the Garden in April and more exciting activities!

We need help in accomplishing all of these events. Choose what you would like to do and where you want to use your interests and gifts.

Join the Revival Team for lots of fun and sharing time with other Chapel Family.

For more information, contact: lesleyrife@att.net .
