“Hold Us Back”
What holds you back?
Have you identified the thing that keeps you from doing what you want or feel called to do?
If you truly have nothing holding you back, congratulations. You win the prize. What prize? The prize of being the only person on the planet who genuinely does not care.
All of us have regrets. Despite the pop culture slogans of the 1990s and 2000s, and the famous 1960 song by Edith Piaf declaring no regrets, most of us struggle to let go of the past and press forward toward what lies ahead.
But what if regret is not the real issue?
What if what holds us back is something beyond our control? Changing weather patterns. A volatile political climate. Social injustice. Global hunger. The list is long, and each issue is heavy enough to make anyone feel stuck or overwhelmed.
I think about athletes competing in this year’s Olympics. Some are battling serious injuries. They know their chances of winning are slim. Competing against the best in the world is hard enough when everything is working perfectly. So why do they keep going? Why even try?
That question leads me somewhere personal. When was the last time I was operating at one hundred percent? Was it when I was twenty or twenty-two years old? Probably not. Even then, my mind was still developing. I lacked experience, wisdom, a history of disappointment, answered prayers, and the deep joy that only comes with time.
Here is the truth: Nobody is in perfect shape. We carry wounds, doubts, responsibilities, fears, and unfinished stories. Yet God still has beautiful plans for us.
The things that hold us back are real. They should not be dismissed or minimized. But they should never be allowed to stop us from trying to move forward. God is far bigger than our obstacles, our regrets, and our unfinished healing.
If we give God room to work, even with all our limitations, we just might be surprised by the beauty waiting ahead of us.
Blessings, Brock
