A Hard Lesson
Some years ago, I served as a high-level board member of a large denomination. I was invited into that role largely because of my background in banking, which is often helpful when financial questions arise.
At that time, the denomination was beginning to experience real financial strain. Local churches were struggling with declining attendance, and many could no longer pay their required support to the larger denominational body.
It was clear that a small adjustment would not be enough. Major changes were needed. Anyone looking from the outside could see it plainly. But for those of us on the inside, the path forward felt complicated. We cared about one another. No one wanted to cut programs, reduce staff, or touch areas that belonged to colleagues around the table. So, we hesitated.
Because we hesitated, the bleeding continued.
Over the next ten to twelve years, the denomination slowly crumbled. My role placed me in a position of awareness and responsibility. I had information, I had influence, and I had moments when I could have spoken more clearly or pressed harder.
After being silenced more than once, I withdrew. I chose quiet. I chose safety.
That was a mistake.
It became a hard lesson for me. When we know we are able to do something about a situation, we are called to act. Opportunities do not announce themselves. They do not linger. They arrive quietly, irregularly, and often briefly.
When opportunities pass, they rarely return in the same form. The wisdom of the situation is knowing what should be done. The courage of the situation is acting when the moment is still open. The blessing of making the right choices is witnessing how God’s blessings are poured upon us when we follow God’s lead.
Where has God placed you? What opportunity will arise that allows you to make a difference? Whether we make a positive difference for one person or twenty, blessings will emerge because we are loving both the LORD and each other.
See you at the Chapel, in person or online!
Blessings, Brock
