“I Lost My (Whatever)”
Have you recently lost your keys? What about your eyeglasses, wallet, or phone?
Losing things is frustrating. As I get older, it seems to happen more often, which does not make me happy. Of course, most of the time, whatever I've lost is already in my hand, on my head, or sitting in plain sight. Still, that brief moment of panic is no picnic. For an instant, it feels like my whole world is coming apart.
If that sounds familiar, then I am glad I am not the only one. I'll retrace my steps, search every room, crawl around on the floor, and look in places where the item could not possibly be. Sometimes I even ask someone else to help.
Asking for help is my least favorite option. I do not like admitting that I lost something. It feels embarrassing. Sometimes I even find myself calculating the value of the missing item, trying to decide whether it is worth the embarrassment of asking for help.
But here is what I have learned. Sometimes another person sees what I cannot. A trusted friend may notice something I overlooked. They may have a different perspective, a different approach, or simply a fresh set of eyes. More often than not, including someone else makes the search easier and the solution clearer. The same is true in life.
When we are struggling with a problem, carrying a burden, or trying to make an important decision, our instinct is often to handle it ourselves. Sometimes we can. But life was never intended to be a solo journey. God places people around us for a reason.
What problem are you trying to solve alone? What burden are you carrying by yourself? What have you "lost" that might benefit from another perspective?
Do not fall for the idea that you have to figure everything out on your own. Life is richer when we include other people. They make burdens lighter, victories sweeter, and difficult moments more manageable.
And sometimes, they help us find our glasses that have been sitting on top of our heads the entire time.
May God bless you by finding (whatever) this week! I’ll see you at the Chapel!
"Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ"
(Galatians 6:2, NRSVue)
God Bless, Brock.
