“How Do They Do That?”

Who lights the room? Is there someone who shines so brightly that when they enter a room, the mood immediately becomes happier?

I know someone like that. Always smiling. Always happy, even when things are tough.

Some folks might look at this person and think they’re faking everything, because nobody can be that happy. But they’re wrong. This person is genuinely full of joy, even when bad times are upon them. The naysayers can throw all the rotten fruit they want, but nothing can destroy the joy this person carries with them.

This is a gift from God.

Yes, this gift is the result of their deep faith in God through Jesus Christ. I can’t deny that, but neither should I try. Clearly, this is God’s work, Holy and Divine.

Yet I still struggle. I try to do it, but no matter how hard I try, I can’t get as happy as this special person. They have something that I do not. Only God can pull that off.

But here’s a secret: Your gifts and mine are equally powerful.

We might not be able to brighten a room upon entry, which is okay. Instead, we might be a thinker who helps discern where God is leading us, or a musician who helps lead in worship. Or maybe we can load a truck, write a big check, help in the kitchen, listen to someone who needs to talk, or simply show up to volunteer when somebody needs us.

God’s work through each of us is bigger than we think. How do I know that? Because anything Divine and Holy is far beyond our perception, and though you might not call your contribution “Divine” or “Holy,” the rest of us might. You may not believe it, but the person who brightens the room upon entry might be looking at you and wondering how you are able to do what
you do.

Sometimes I wonder, “How do they do that?” At the same time, somebody else may be looking at me and wondering the same thing. And somebody is looking at you, too.

Maybe that’s part of the beauty of how God created us. None of us has everything, but every one of us has something.

You have something somebody else needs. You have Something somebody else admires. You have Something God can use.

You have a gift. Use it.

Come to worship this Sunday! In person and online, we're always blessed by your presence!
