"Ready for Easter?"
This week is Holy Week, the final stretch of the Lenten season leading us to Easter. The traditions of Holy Week date back to at least the third century. These traditions include fasting, penance, silence, and reflection, among others.
I am not sure how many people pay close attention to Holy Week. Each day carries its own meaning, and there is much that could be done. Yet among pastors, there are really only three questions we tend to ask one another this week:
- Are you hosting Maundy Thursday or Good Friday services?
- When is your Easter Egg Hunt or community event?
- How many services are you holding on Easter Sunday, and at what times?
These questions may sound simple, even a bit superficial, but they open the door for deeper conversations. We share ideas, compare notes, and support one another through what is one of the busiest weeks of the year.
The truth is, very few pastors feel completely ready for Easter. The task list is long. Each service and event carries the weight of its own preparation. And on top of that, many of us are already trying to get ahead on next week’s work so we can take a brief pause after Easter.
This is not a request for sympathy. It is simply a reminder of how meaningful this week is for those involved in ministry. Church staff are working long hours. Volunteers are giving their time freely. Musicians are practicing, preparing, and doing their best to stay healthy. All of this happens because of a shared love for the Lord and a desire to offer something meaningful to others.
So let me offer three thoughts:
- If you are a church volunteer, thank you. You are seen. You are appreciated. Your efforts matter more than you know.
- If you are not actively involved in a church, think about someone in your life who is. Pay attention to them this week. They are working hard to create a space for others. Honor that effort by showing up this Easter.
- If you are part of a church staff or a musician, take care of yourself. Stay hydrated. Rest when you can. Take care of your body and your spirit. Your presence and your joy will mean more than you realize.
Holy Week is here! Are we ready? Yes, because God is already there, full of smiles and blessings for everyone!
See you this week at the Chapel on Good Friday at 6 p.m. and on Easter at 7 a.m. and
10 a.m.
Blessings, Brock
