 “Business Card Reminders”

When I began my first job thirty-five years ago, my father gave me some advice that I have never forgotten. The first thing he said was that I should always, and I mean always, carry business cards with me. No matter the occasion or where I happened to be, I was supposed to have business cards in my pocket.

That lesson has stayed with me for a long time. To this day, business cards are always in my back right pocket. If I am fishing, they are there. If I am at the grocery store, they are there. The reason is simple: I never know whom I might meet, and a business card helps keep me in someone's memory.

That may be their purpose, but I also use them for something else. They are my notepad.

I need to write things down to remember them. When I encounter something important, I pull out a business card, jot down a note, and move the card to my front shirt pocket. By the end of most days, I usually have two or three cards in my pocket covered with reminders. Sure enough, when I look at them later, I almost always find something I had completely forgotten. It happens nearly every day.

What about you? Do you write things down? Do you keep notes on your phone? Do you rely on a calendar or electronic reminders?

Forgetting is easy. In the Bible, we occasionally read that God "remembered" someone or something. Whenever I encounter those passages, I find myself wondering, "Does that mean God forgot?" The answer is no. God does not forget. Instead, those moments are intended to draw our attention to God's faithfulness. When Scripture says God remembered Noah, Abraham, Rachel, or God’s own people, it means God acted according to God’s promises.

God never loses track of people. God never misplaces them. God never forgets.

Unlike God, we are forgetful people. We lose our keys, our glasses, our phones, and sometimes even our priorities. That is why it is important for me to write things down. It helps me to remember important things, but there are some things I should never forget: God’s faithfulness, God’s promises, and God’s love.

"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits." (Psalm 103:2 NRSV)

God Bless, Brock.
