"Unanimous Isn't Certain"
Will everyone agree with me? A unanimous decision is always the correct one, right? Surely you agree! Well... maybe.
If a large group of people reaches the same conclusion, there is a good chance they are headed in the right direction. Then again, history is filled with examples of entire groups making poor decisions together. On the other hand, a unanimous vote of one person is certainly unanimous, but that does not make it correct either.
Our reality is this: very little in life is certain. Everything on earth is moving, changing, aging, and fragile.
Consider a simple example: Tonight, I may sit down and enjoy my favorite meal. A few hours later, I may regret every bite of it. It was my favorite meal when I ordered it, but by bedtime, I may feel very differently.
Uncertainty is part of what makes life so interesting. Rarely is anything permanent, and few things will remain unchanged. Even our best plans and most confident decisions can unravel. Everything, that is, except God.
God is the one constant in a world of change. God's character, love, and faithfulness do not shift with circumstances. That is why people of faith spend so much time talking about God. We are not simply trying to convince others. We are trying to keep God at the center of our own thinking so that our decisions are guided by something greater than ourselves.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with asking God for help after a decision has gone sideways. I do it all the time. But inviting God into the decision from the beginning can save us a great deal of pain and regret.
Summer is a good time to think about decision-making. The days are longer, schedules are looser, and the opportunities for doing something foolish seem to multiply. (Margaritas may have something to do with that!)
But remember this: You are important to God. Whatever decision lies before you, invite God into the process. Listen carefully. Pray sincerely. Seek wisdom.
People may disagree, and circumstances may change. Even unanimous decisions can be wrong… but God's way remains the right way.
