Out and About with Tom....
During the last few weeks I have been privileged to be present for two events marking passages in our Disciples Chaplain community.
The Rev. Steve Willis was remembered at a Memorial Service held at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Las Vegas, NV. In addition to being pastor of this congregation Steve was endorsed as a volunteer chaplain with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. He had a passion for serving his community and was beloved by all who came under his care and pastoral leadership. As a chaplain Steve responded to the mass shooting incident at a music festival in Las Vegas last year to provide long hours of support to those most directly affected. Steve represented the best values of selfless service and compassion that all of our chaplains strive to embody. He was one of us and will be greatly missed by his family, his congregation, the wider church, his community, and all his chaplain peers.
As the denominational chaplain endorser I was invited to graduation ceremonies at the U.S. Air Force Chaplain School at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. Chaplain, 1LT, Christopher Schilling completed the basic chaplain course and is now serving as an IMA Cha
plain in the Air Force Reserve at Scott AFB, IL. Chris is also a Disciples pastor serving in the Ohio Region.

While in Las Vegas I had brunch with Chaplain Howard Nelson w
ho serves at the VA hospital there. Howard is a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and hosted my presence at
the memorial service for his pastor.
In Montgomery, Alabama I was able to have lunch with Chaplain Schilling and with 2LT Nichole Swind
le, US Army Chaplain Candidate. Nicki is a seminar
ian and is also campaigning for a seat in the State Senate in Alabama. Her plate is very full these days. She has a passion for service and justice for all.

In the weeks ahead I will be visiting with students at the Disciples Seminary Foundation in Claremont and meeting with Disciples Chaplains serving ministries in the Pacific Southwest Region.

Mary Kearns, accepted a Hospice Chaplain job with Bristol Hospice in Roseville, California.
Carla Norton, accepted the position of Faith and Health Division as Rev. Dr. Delois Broady retired. Carla oversees Chaplains, CPE students who are in rotation at this site and Church Health Network Navigators and volunteers as we provide compassionate care to our patients, families, community and fellow Associates.
Sue Beverly retired from Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis on July 1, 2018.
Chaplain Owen Chandler was promoted to Major. Owen shares "
