Chapter 11 of 12: November

Hello CBS,

As the pages of 2024 open to November, we're greeted by an assortment of time-honored traditions. While moving through campus today, you may have noticed the gold ribbons wrapped around trees near the MU. This visual tribute, organized by our partners at the UC Davis Veterans Success Center (@ucdavisvsc), serves as a poignant reminder of the service and sacrifice of our family, friends, and alumni who have served in the armed forces. Thank you to our veterans for your dedication and commitment.

In just over two weeks, we’ll take a break to celebrate Thanksgiving—a time to gather with loved ones, reflect, and express gratitude. You may have spotted our feathered friends, the wild turkeys, roaming the campus. These unique visitors are descendants of nine wild turkeys that originally settled in the Davis cemetery nearly two decades ago. With their bold struts and assertive demeanor, they’ve become iconic figures around town. While they won’t make it to any of our Thanksgiving tables, sharing stories of your encounters with these “local celebrities” might spark some fun conversations during your holiday meal!

This brings us to one of our favorite CBS traditions: Friendsgiving! Over the next two weeks, we invite you to look around in each of your classes. Take a moment to connect, support, and celebrate with your fellow CBS students. Here’s how you can take part:

  • Ask for—or offer—help. Take the time to share and connect with other students via study groups and trips to office hours. Your faculty will thank you!
  • Offer support by tapping into campus resources like the newly renovated Academic Assistance and Tutoring Centers, BASC, Student Health & Counseling Services, or Aggie Compass Basic Needs Center and the ASUCD Pantry.
  • Celebrate, whether that takes the form of a meal together, a free high-five, or even just a few laughs, as you reflect on how far you've come during the Fall Quarter.

Wellness Corner:

Breathing out midterm stress

When stressed, we often hear advice like "take a deep breath" or "in through the nose, out through the mouth." Why? Science. Each nasal inhale releases nitric oxide, which widens blood vessels and helps oxygenated blood reach your organs and tissues. Exhaling through the mouth allows for a quicker release of carbon dioxide from the body. Breathe!
