December 2022

Message from the president:

Happy Holidays everyone!

It’s been a busy fall for AFP Nova Scotia, with lots of opportunities to connect and learn together. I want to take a moment to thank our board for all of the work they’ve done to create these unique and impactful offerings for chapter members, your work is so appreciated.

I’d also like to recognize two board members who are finishing up their term with us this year:

Vanessa Burns has been co-chair of the Maritime Fundraising Confernece for the past few years, and although she’s stepping down as a board member, she has agreed to stay on with us for MFC (yay!). Her enthusiasm and energy are always appreciated.

Anne Long has been serving as our communications chair and this newsletter has been her main project, communications is no small task and I want to say thank you for all of her work the past few years. We will miss you!

One last thank you to our members, none of this would be possible without your support and engagement.

I hope that you all have a safe and restful holiday season, I look forward to hitting the ground running in 2023!

All the best,

Maritime Fundraising Conference 2023

Volunteers Needed

For over 35 years, the Maritime Fundraising Conference has been the touchstone for strengthening and growing our not-for-profit community! Volunteers are the reason for its long-standing success. Your help is needed to offer yet another outstanding MFC to our community.

Proposed for early June (TBC), we are super-excited about our theme and new format! We will hold a one-day in-person symposium, with an option to attend virtually, and also include an evening networking social. The plan for MFC will be to alternate this new 1-day event with our traditional 2-day format.

We hear terms like “building back better” and “the new way forward”— but what do they really mean!? We will learn more and build upon what we started at our inspiring National Philanthropy Day (NPD) panel discussion on “breaking through red tape”. MFC 2023 will build a toolbox for delegates filled with essential skills, resources, and networks. Together, we will dig deeper, break through barriers, provide tangible tools, and commit to strategies for future success for all.

Momentum will continue ramping up in the new year with a 3-part webinar series in partnership with the Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS) and culminating at the Conference. Our aim is for our sector to commit to working in cooperation with each other toward becoming the best we can be in delivering on our respective missions.

AFP Nova Scotia and our annual Conference runs on the combined power of our volunteers. Please join us at our MFC 2023 Kick-Off Meeting in January.

P.S. Volunteering with AFP Nova Scotia is a wonderful opportunity to grow your network and your skills! You do not have to be an AFP Member to volunteer on committees.

Support Diversity and Inclusion in the Fundraising Community

Complete Your AFP Member Demographic Information

AFP is committed to the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) in the fundraising profession. Join us in supporting those principles by providing demographic information in your AFP member profile. Your information will remain confidential and is used to benchmark progress, promote equity, and create new programs.

Having complete demographic information helps the AFP community for a few reasons:

  • We can better define what inclusion, diversity, equity, and access means to our members and the broader fundraising community, and it will help to assess our progress.
  • Based on the data you provide, we can create programs, products, and services that match what you, our members, will feel connected to.
  • Having more complete demographic data will help us promote equity within our community and grow membership through an inclusive lens.

If you update your demographic information before January 20th, 2023, send an email to Charles MacKenzie, IDEA Chair, at charles.mackenzie@gmail.com to be entered into a draw for a $100 Nova Box gift card!

Federal Budget 2023

Take Action with Imagine Canada

Over the next few months, the government will write Budget 2023 and decide how federal dollars will be spent for the next year. We need you to ask your MP and federal Ministers to make core funding for nonprofits a top priority in the next budget. Tell the government they must start providing core funding to the nonprofit sector to support nonprofit missions, resilience and impact.

A letter will be sent to your MP, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, Treasury Board President Mona Fortier, and Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Karina Gould.
