February 2024

A Message from the president:

Winter is officially here, and in true Nova Scotian style – all at once.

While some Januarys feel long and slow, serving as a warmup for the year to come, January 2024 was anything but. And we rather liked it!

AFP Nova Scotia joined forces with NewGround Leadership to present a screening of Uncharitable. If you haven’t had a chance to see this documentary, please do. It was a very interesting and refreshing take on the charitable sector.

As well, our New Year Mixer, presented by Glenn Stewardson and The Donor Motivation Program, was a wonderful way to hit the reset button and connect with fellow fundraisers again.

But what I enjoyed most about these events is the new and different faces taking part. It’s wonderful to see our sector grow and have new interest in the professional fundraising field. If it was your first time at an AFP Nova Scotia event – welcome!

The AFP Nova Scotia Board of Directors is working hard to support our Nova Scotian and PEI fundraisers. We are excited to soon be unveiling our new AFP Nova Scotia IDEA statement. While it is “just” a statement, it’s a very important one. This is going to frame how we thoughtfully move forward to embed inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility into the work, events and educational opportunities we provide our members. It’s cliché to call our IDEA work and the other important movements within the professional fundraising sector a “journey” or a “rollercoaster”. But while cliché, it’s fitting. No matter if it’s professional or personal, we all ride the ups and downs of life daily. As we tackle the “ride” that 2024 presents us with, remember to have patience with yourself and others – you never know what kind of obstacles or stops there are along their track.

All the very best,

Alison Clements – President, AFP Nova Scotia

Communication was static for a long time, but technological advancements have changed the environment fairly quickly. Add in email, smart watches, and Zoom, and there is a dizzying array of ways to connect. So what’s the best way to contact your donors? (Vertitus Group)
