February 2026

Dear AFP Colleagues and Friends,

As I step into this new month as your President, my focus is unwavering: we will hit our goals by going back to our roots—together. Whether you are an individual fundraiser or a leader in a global organization, you are part of a shared mission. To keep our sector vibrant, we are exploring creative ways to engage new members, leveraging innovative tools, and fostering peer-to-peer communities that will empower every supporter to be an advocate.

Our Path Forward:

  • Our strength lies in our diversity. We are committed to the principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA). This means ensuring that diverse voices choose the music. By reflecting the communities we serve, our strategies become smarter, more creative, and more effective.
  • A collaborative approach. We aim to build a strategic network that will create a ripple effect of change. By exchanging knowledge and pooling resources, we can address the urgent need for inclusion and professional resilience in our workplace.

On behalf of AFP NS, I would like to congratulate Feed Nova Scotia for being named the Not-For-Profit Business of the Year at the Halifax Chamber of Commerce 2026 Business Awards in January 2026. Recognized for its vital role in addressing food insecurity through a network of food banks, meal programs, and advocacy. I would like to congratulate the other finalists in this category: ASC Industries, Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia ReStore, Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, and TEAMWork Cooperative.

You are doing the hard work that makes immortality possible through philanthropy. Thank you for your grit, your heart, and your relentless pursuit of a better world.

As Winston Churchill said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give".

With deep gratitude,

Basim Sobeih

President, AFP Nova Scotia

Celebrating African Heritage Month

Each February, Nova Scotians come together to honour African Heritage Month, a time to recognize the history, culture, achievements and contributions of African Nova Scotians and people of African descent across the province.

The 2026 theme for African Heritage Month is: “Strength in Unity – Moving Forward with Purpose, Prosperity, Power and Progress.”

The theme reflects the strength that grows when communities come together with shared purpose. It honours the progress made through solidarity and the power of unity to create lasting change.

This year’s theme also highlights the importance of intergenerational connection. Elders, as knowledge keepers and leaders, carry the stories that help us understand where we come from. Youth bring new energy and vision to carry that legacy forward. Together, they show us that unity is not only our history. It’s our way forward.
