A Message from the 2024 Maritime Fundraising Conference Committee:
Dear Fellow Fundraisers,
MFC 2024: Building Better Practices is TWO MONTHS AWAY!
From Best to Better, the 2024 Maritime Fundraising Conference, presented by Global Philanthropic Canada, will inspire you to evaluate your best practices and evolve how you engage in fundraising.
AFP Nova Scotia is thrilled to let you know that the venue is reserved, the robust list of educational sessions is almost finalized, our amazing keynote speaker is booked and plans are underway for the post-conference networking event presented by Donor Motivation Program! We can’t wait to share more details with you soon.
Our call for speakers and session topics was met with staggering enthusiasm this year - it was challenging to narrow down the sessions and the exceptional presenters. We are so looking forward to offering you a rich, diverse and impactful conference.
During last month’s Annual General Meeting, thee AFP Nova Scotia Board shared the IDEA Pathway they have been developing with the leadership of consultant April Howe of Crayon Strategies. This work has served as an important guide in every step of planning this year’s conference.
Registration has launched so keep reading. We’ll also send out for a separate email with those registration options. Take advantage of the Early-Bird registration price of $125 for members!
We hope you can join us on Monday, September 16 for the Maritime Fundraising Conference presented by Global Philanthropic Canada and on Tuesday, September 17 for a moves management workshop facilitated by Guy Mallabone, CEO of Global Philanthropic Canada. The conference and the workshop will take place at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax and will offer a journey of introspection and innovation in modern philanthropy and fundraising, where critical reflection sparks actionable change.
We are grateful to our Presenting Sponsor Global Philanthropic Canada along with all the generous sponsors who make this conference possible.
All the best and see you in September,
Shaylyn MacAulay & Glenn Massad

We want you to be a part of this journey with us, as we move through the steps on our IDEA Pathway we will be looking for volunteers to help support this work.
Last year, after news of the racism that happened with the AFP Greater Toronto Chapter (GTC) Board became public, we knew staying silent was not an option. Within weeks of learning what happened to Nneka Allen, Múthoní Karíukí and Mide Akerewusi we issued a statement of solidarity on our website.
At the same time we made a commitment as a board to take action and do our own work. We know that racism is systemic and that we all must take responsibility to do our part to uphold the values of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA).
Our work started at our Maritime Fundraising Conference last June, with a frank conversation led by April Howe. We appreciated the honest feedback from you, our members and others in the sector. It inspired us to engage April as a consultant with our Chapter to lead us through the creation of our own IDEA Pathway.
As part of this work we created a working group dedicated to moving this work forward with the board and membership.

Fundraising & Privacy in Canada: Five Things to Know | Billions of data points containing personal information crisscross the internet every hour. Search a recipe for pineapple upside down cake and an advertisement for a pineapple sale at your local market appears on your Facebook page five minutes later. User data is a commodity. Yet, for fundraisers, respecting donors’ privacy is vital in creating a sense of trust between organization and donors. It’s not only best practice, but is part of AFP’s Code of Ethical Standards, a commitment to which is part of being a member of AFP.
