Dear Friends and Colleagues,
As we settle into the summer months, I find myself reflecting on the incredible momentum our chapter has built over the past several weeks. Before looking ahead, I would first like to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who joined us for our Annual General Meeting on June 25.
The success of our AGM reflects the remarkable community that makes AFP Nova Scotia so special. Thank you to our Board of Directors, volunteers, members, and guests for your leadership, dedication, and commitment to strengthening our profession.
I would also like to express my appreciation to Delta Hotels Dartmouth by Marriott for their outstanding hospitality and valued partnership. A special thank you to BNP, and to Moncef Lakouas and Glenn Massad, for delivering an engaging workshop, Unlock Fund Development: Practical Strategies for Non-Profits. Their practical insights reinforced that sustainable fundraising is built through strategy, collaboration, and continuous learning.
One of the greatest privileges of serving as President is witnessing the generosity and innovation that exists across our province. Every month reminds us of the extraordinary impact philanthropy has on the lives of Nova Scotians.
Moments in Philanthropy
This month, I would like to recognize the inspiring story of Harper Tanton and the Believe in Me Harper campaign. Diagnosed with the rare genetic condition CTNNB1 syndrome, Harper is one of only three children in the world selected for a pioneering gene-replacement clinical trial in Slovenia. Through the generosity of individuals, businesses, and community organizations—including Harper's Fair hosted by The Pelvic Health Clinic—her family raised over $89,000.
Total estimated cost: $250,000. To ensure Harper can complete the full clinical trial process.
Harper's journey reminds us that philanthropy is about creating hope, inspiring collective action, and changing lives through the compassion of an entire community.
On behalf of AFP Nova Scotia, we send our warmest wishes to Harper Tanton and her family. May this next chapter bring renewed hope, healing, and brighter days ahead. Thank you for allowing your journey to inspire individuals across Nova Scotia and to remind us all why philanthropy matters.
As the Association of Fundraising Professionals, we have the privilege of witnessing generosity from every perspective. We see philanthropy through the work of charities, foundations, corporate partners, volunteers, professional fundraisers, and individuals who champion causes that have touched their own lives. Every campaign tells a story. Every gift reflects compassion. Every act of giving, whether large or small, helps create lasting change.
To everyone courageously sharing your story or rallying your community around a cause close to your heart, we see you, we hear you, and we celebrate you.
Hope, Resilience & Generosity
As I reflect on this month's stories of generosity and resilience, I am reminded of the words of Desmond Tutu:
"Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness."
Whether it is a family advocating for a loved one, a volunteer giving their time, a donor making a gift, or a fundraiser helping bring a vision to life, philanthropy is ultimately an act of hope. It reflects our belief that together we can create a brighter future for the communities we serve.
As we look ahead, please mark your calendars and complete registration:
2026 AFP Canada Leadership Retreat - July 23-25, 2026
Maritime Fundraising Conference (MFC26) – September 28, 2026
Thank you for your leadership, your generosity of spirit, and your commitment to making a difference. Together, we are building stronger organizations, stronger communities, and a stronger future for philanthropy in Nova Scotia.
Warm regards,
