Dear AFP colleagues and friends:
My mom passed at the end of May. She was a gentle and kind soul who battled Alzheimer's for more than a decade. She was at home with my Dad up until 15 months ago. When my mother got her diagnosis, she sat every one of her five daughters down, separately, to discuss her wishes. She did not want to be kept at home, she did not want to live with any of her daughters, and she definitely didn't want to be a burden on her beloved husband, Buzz. As the disease ravaged on, Dad valiantly took care of Mom not wanting to let her out of his sight. It was a true battle with Dad to allow Mom to go to a nursing home when the care was too much for his 85 yr old body to handle. This was not the best time to be in care as the pandemic prevented us from visiting Mom in the way we wanted. Mom’s death has me contemplating the relationships and experiences that were curtailed or lost during this global pandemic.
We lost something valuable these past two years. We have not been able to see as many people or travel as much and it won’t be easy to rebuild friendships that withered in the pandemic. We need to push ourselves to make up for those lost connections. Invite a friend out for a walk. Connect with someone you haven’t seen in awhile. Send a message to someone telling them you’ve missed seeing their face. Connect, connect, connect! And, take a vacation and stop working so hard.
I encourage you to keep doing the amazing work you have been doing to help others. I encourage you to find the moments in each day to do something that makes you truly happy. I encourage you to go back out there and start living.
This is my last note as the AFP Nova Scotia Chapter President. Whitney McLean, CFRE is ably replacing me as the President of AFP-NS as my term is done. Thank you for making my year as President so much fun and so rewarding.

Message from the president-elect:
Happy June everyone!
For those of you who might not know me, my name is Whitney MacLean and I’m the incoming President of AFP-NS for the 2022-23 board year. I’ve been volunteering with AFP since 2016 and am excited to be taking on this new role with AFP-NS. I look forward to getting to know you all throughout the year.
A special thank you to Heather Strickey for her leadership this past year, she has led us through one of the most unpredictable years we’ve experienced to date and did it all with a smile on her face. Thank you, Heather!
What an exciting month June has been so far, we kicked things off with our 2022 Maritime Fundraising Conference on June 6-7, welcoming over 170 delegates, speakers and sponsors to our ‘virtual’ corner of the world. Over two days we attended sessions that challenged us to think differently, bigger and better, to build a sector that's inclusive, welcoming and impactful.
Thank you to our incredible presenting sponsor Global Philanthropic Canada, we wouldn’t have been able to offer this conference without your continued support. Thank you to all of the sponsors who made #MFC2022 such a success.
To our co-chairs Vanessa Burns and Daisy Cobden, thank you for leading this initiative and thank you to the amazing committee of volunteers who worked tirelessly to bring it to life.
Can’t wait to see what #MFC2023 brings!

Thank you for making the 2022 Maritime Fundraising Conference a success!
Thank you to our delegates, speakers, partners and sponsors for another fabulous MFC! We are especially thankful for our Presenting Sponsor, Global Philanthropic Canada. And hats off to our other sponsors: CanadaHelps, Trellis, Imagine Canada, The Fundraising Lab, The Donor Motivation Program, NSCC Foundation & Alumni Relations, i-Wave, Vanessa Burns Consulting, AFP Canada Foundation for Philanthropy, and Charity Village.
Along with our IDEA theme, we also shone a spotlight on our young professionals and emerging leaders. Our future is in good hands.
For delegates, please know that you can continue to access the Pheedloop platform for 90 days post-MFC. Please take in some of the sessions you might have missed.
And speaking of how we did – we couldn’t have done this without our brilliant co-chairs, Vanessa Burns and Daisy Cobden and our amazing committee members! Thank you!

Missed your chance to attend? It's not too late! Introducing MFC REPLAY
The buzz from the Maritime Fundraising Conference 2022: Changing IDEAs, presented by Global Philanthropic Canada, continues to ripple through our sector. Comments like, “It’s the best virtual conference I have attended so far.” and “The IDEA content will blow you away.” and “AFP Nova Scotia is, bar-none, THE best AFP Chapter in Canada”…well, the last one, maybe not :)…but the overall impression of MFC 2022 has been overwhelmingly positive from delegates, sponsors, and speakers.
Now is the chance for you or your team to participate. The MFC 2022 Committee is offering a BRAND NEW way to catch up on all the sessions. We’re calling it the “MFC REPLAY”.
For the low price of $120 for members+ and $150 for non-members, you can access all recorded MFC sessions until mid-September. You can even earn up to 14 CFRE education points!
+Member rate includes AFP Members & CAGP Members, Students, and Young Professionals (fundraisers 30 yrs or under).
