June 2023

A Message from the president:

Hello Everyone,

This month was challenging for many in our Province as the wildfires impacted families across HRM and Shelburne counties. I hope that any of your friends and loved ones that were impacted by the wildfires are safe and able to begin the process of healing as the province continues to receive much needed rain.

June marked our first one day symposium-style Maritime Fundraising Conference, it was so nice to see so many of you join us for such an impactful day of learning. Thank you once again to each of our sponsors who made the day possible, particularly to our presenting sponsor Global Philanthropic. These opportunities to learn and connect would not be possible without you.

We closed out the month with our Annual General Meeting where we celebrated what we’ve accomplished throughout the year, welcomed a whole new group of directors, and bid farewell to some of our incredible board members.

Please join me saying a big thank you to those who will unfortunately be stepping off the board when the term officially wraps up in December:

  • Daphne Carter
  • Heather Strickey
  • Taylor Huestis
  • Mark Inglis
  • Liz Struijf-Mandishora

We appreciate all that you have done this year and in years past to further the work of AFP Nova Scotia!

I’ll finish off with a welcome to those joining us in 2024:

  • Angela Rafuse
  • Basim Sobeih
  • Jordan Fisher
  • Carmen Boyko
  • Lauren Wu

I look forward to working with each of you!

As a board we will be taking a pause for the month of July so next you will be hearing from us will be in August! I wish you all a safe and happy summer.

And as always please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or suggestions, we’d love to hear from you!

With sincere thanks,

Whitney Maclean – President, AFP Nova Scotia and the AFP Nova Scotia Board of Directors

Global Philanthropic Canada Presents:

MFC 2023 - Tools for Change

AFP Nova Scotia’s one-day Maritime Fundraising Conference presented by Global Philanthropic Canada was a resounding success.

The long-anticipated event on June 12 was an opportunity to connect, share, network, and re-energize after three long years away from an in-person MFC.

Thanks to you, our delegates, speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and partners for coming together with an open heart and a willingness to learn and grow. As our IDEA session presenter, April Howe, put it – change takes time, it is hard; it starts with our heads, then leads to our hearts, and eventually to our hands to make change happen. It’s a process. A journey.

Our intention and purpose is to keep on connecting and sharing. MFC23 is but a first step. There is so much more to come. We hope you will take that journey together.

New AFP Member Spotlight: Amber Froese

Meet the inspiring Amber Froese, the Vice President Marketing & Communications for Rafflebox Technologies, and a new member to AFP Nova Scotia.

“I’ve heard good things about AFP over the years and now that I'm in the fundraising space, I was excited to check it out,” Amber reflected. “I've only been to one in-person event but if the people I met and the conversations I had were any indication, AFP is a motivated group of people who are welcoming, hardworking and kind.”

In Amber’s role, she loves supporting charities with new technologies. “The best part of my job is every time we improve our platform or learn a new skill, we're able to share those learnings with charities to help them raise more funds for their worthy causes,” explained Amber. “Fundraising usually means there is a deep sense of purpose and passion connected to the cause. I enjoy working to create an easier way for charities to raise money online.”

Please give a warm welcome to Amber. We are very excited to learn and grow with you.

National Indigenous Peoples Day

June 21 was National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to celebrate and honour Indigenous heritage, diversity, achievements, and culture.

The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund aims to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

This year, more than 1,500 students attended the event in-person and thousands more tuned in virtually. Click here to watch the live recording and learn more about reconciliACTION – a meaningful action that moves reconciliation forward.

2SLGBTQ+ Helplines

As we celebrate Pride Month this June, we recognize the progress we’ve made and the challenges that continue to persist. Social stigma and prejudice continue to affect 2SLGBTQ+ communities across Canada.

Humanity shared a list of five Canadian organizations who offer confidential and non-judgmental support to anyone in the 2SLGBTQ+ community. If you, or someone you know, is in crisis, please call one of the numbers listed below. And remember, the world is better with you in it.

  • Trans Lifeline - 1-877-330-6366
  • Crisis Services Canada - 1-833-456-4566
  • Pflag Canada - 1-888-530-6777
