June 2024

A Message from the president:

Hello Fellow Fundraisers,

Time is a fascinating concept, isn’t it?

Time is a structure. Time is a frame of mind. Time is something there is rarely enough of, even though it is endless.

And yet here we are, halfway through 2024.

Time is counting down to AFP Nova Scotia’s Annual General Meeting. But it’s not going to be your typical AGM. We are inviting you to join us on our IDEA Pathway. This AFP Nova Scotia-initiative, supported by AFP Global, is going to be a game-changer, not just for members within our chapter, but for fundraisers across AFP.

Time is also ticking away as the deadline for proposals to present at this year’s Maritime Fundraising Conference, presented by Global Philanthropic Canada (deadline is fast approaching!). I can’t give away all the MFC surprises BUT I can tell you the energy Shaylyn & Glenn’s conference organizing team is bringing to this year’s event is special.

Same with the nominees for the 2025 AFP Nova Scotia Board of Directors. They bring to our chapter new and diverse voices, in a multitude of ways. Again, come out and meet them at our upcoming AGM (which you can RSVP for here).

If we don’t have an opportunity to cross paths at our AGM, please have a wonderful and safe summer.

All the very best,

Alison Clements – President, AFP Nova Scotia

Maritime Fundraising Conference 2024

Presented by Global Philanthropic Canada

Save the Date!

The Maritime Fundraising Conference is the largest professional development and networking opportunity for fundraising and non-profit professionals in the Maritimes.

This year we are asking the question: Are fundraising "best practices" really what's best for everyone?

Join us on a journey of introspection and innovation in modern philanthropy and fundraising, where critical reflection sparks actionable change.

The Maritime Fundraising Conference, presented by Global Philanthropic Canada will be held on Monday, September 16 and Tuesday, September 17. It’s our chance to celebrate the strides we’ve made in our profession and confront truths head-on. We’ll be challenging ourselves to reimagine best practices and evolve how we engage in fundraising, examining established fundraising best practices through an expanded lens of inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility and anti-racism.

Date: Monday, September 16 and Tuesday, September 17, 2024

Location: Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, 1055 Marginal Road, Halifax, NS B3H 4P7.

Registration details will be announced shortly.

Call for Speakers

We are looking for speakers who can offer transformative dialogues, share ground breaking ideas, and help us forge a path towards a new era of fundraising.

This year the conference will be challenging the community to reimagine best practices and evolve how fundraisers engage in fundraising. This is a call and a commitment to constructing better practices that move us toward progress and elevate inclusion, diversity, equity, and access.

Call for Volunteers

Looking to be a part of the conference as a volunteer? There is still time to join a 2024 Maritime Fundraising Conference Committee.

We are looking for dynamic volunteers to help bring the conference to life. Our committees are a fun and engaging way to connect with others in the fundraising sector while supporting the conference.

Recruitment is underway for one of five committees.

IDEA Pathway

We want you to be a part of this journey with us, as we move through the steps on our IDEA Pathway we will be looking for volunteers to help support this work.

Last year, after news of the racism that happened with the AFP Greater Toronto Chapter (GTC) Board became public, we knew staying silent was not an option. Within weeks of learning what happened to Nneka Allen, Múthoní Karíukí and Mide Akerewusi we issued a statement of solidarity on our website.

At the same time we made a commitment as a board to take action and do our own work. We know that racism is systemic and that we all must take responsibility to do our part to uphold the values of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA).

Our work started at our Maritime Fundraising Conference last June, with a frank conversation led by April Howe. We appreciated the honest feedback from you, our members and others in the sector. It inspired us to engage April as a consultant with our Chapter to lead us through the creation of our own IDEA Pathway.

As part of this work we created a working group dedicated to moving this work forward with the board and membership.
