March 2023

Message from the president:

Hello Everyone,

Happy Spring! It’s hard to believe it’s already here, but I think it’s safe to say we’re happy about it. It may still be chilly but at least each day is brighter and brighter.

The next few months are busy one’s for us! We’re partnering with IONS (Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia) to offer a three part webinar series titled Funding Community Impact, the first session Our Two Cents: Funding 101 for Community Organizations kicks things off on March 29, 2023. In this series, we will hear from experts, practitioners, and funders to equip community leaders with a fuller understanding of how funding works, what gets in the way, and novel approaches from the field. Registration is open now.

The intention is for the series to run throughout the next three months leading us right to the Maritime Fundraising Conference (MFC) where the final session will be hosted in person as part of our one-day conference.

Details for MFC will be out very soon but the great news is we have a date and a venue: June 12 at NSCC Ivany Campus in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. With our brand new one day format we’ll focus on capacity building with workshop style sessions designed to have you walking away with tangible tips and innovative ideas to implement in your day to day work. Registration will be open very soon!

So stay tuned to our socials for updates on these exciting opportunities to learn and connect!

On a separate note, are you interested in volunteering with AFP at a National level? If so let us know, as AFP members you’re eligible to participate in any committee with AFP Canada or the AFP Canada Foundation. Committees range from IDEA, Communications, Every Member Campaign, Research and the National Scholarship Program. It’s a great opportunity to get to know colleagues from across Canada and give back to the sector. If you’re interested please reach out to: whitney.maclean@nscc.ca.

Also as always if you have an idea for a session, event, or anything you’d like to see from us as your local Chapter please let us know and we’d be happy to chat.

Have a lovely spring and all the best,

Whitney MacLean

New AFP Member Spotlight - Melissa Cameron

Meet Melissa! Melissa is the Fund Development Coordinator for Island Nature Trust in Prince Edward Island and a new member to AFP Nova Scotia.

“I am the only full-time fundraising team member and am very passionate about the mission and vision of the Trust,” Melissa explained. “I joined AFP to have access to both local and North American resources and community. The Nova Scotia Chapter was highly recommended by others in the fundraising field.”

After co-founding a charity in 2020, Melissa was inspired to pursue a career in fundraising. “I learned the importance of strategic fundraising and the role the profession can play in securing donations and creating long-lasting relationships with an organization,” Melissa shared.

Co-founding a charity is extremely impressive, but when Melissa reflects on her career so far, she is most proud of a special initiative called The Mother Tree. Melissa developed this for Island Nature Trust, and it helps support Mother Trees (seed trees) in our natural areas.

Please give a warm welcome to Melissa. We are very excited to learn and grow with you.

Young Professionals and Emerging Leaders Happy Hour

We had a successful Young Professional and Emerging Leaders event on February 22nd at Bianca Aperitivo Bar.

Approximately a dozen young professionals connected, chatted about our sector, and inspired one another.

Stay tuned for our next event in April.

Mentorship Mixer

Thank you to the Middle Spoon Bedford for hosting and everyone who participated in the fun at our very first AFP Nova Scotia and CAGP Nova Scotia Mentorship Mixer.

There were delicious drinks, fabulous food, and meaningful connections. Plus, a new mentor/mentee match was made! We can't wait to continue the conversation at the next one.
