May 2023

A Message from the president:

Hello Everyone,

On May 12, 2023 we released our statement as the Board of AFP Nova Scotia regarding the AFP Greater Toronto Chapter, and the harm and racism voiced by our colleagues in the sector. I invite each of you to take time to read through this statement on our website, as it details the specific actions we plan to take as a Chapter.

If you are interested in getting involved with the Chapter in this work and action plan, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at afpnovascotia@gmail.com. We will also have the opportunity to gather for group discussions at our Maritime Fundraising Conference on June 12, 2023. We are pleased to offer an IDEA rate for this conference in an effort to remove financial barriers to attending, registration is still open.

Our board is also currently accepting nominations for the 2024 term. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the board of directors, let us know by completing the online submission form.

I’ll close out this newsletter with a sincere thank you to our membership for your continued support, incredible passion, and drive for change. We couldn’t do any of this work without your support.

With sincere thanks,

Whitney Maclean – President, AFP Nova Scotia and the AFP Nova Scotia Board of Directors

Young Professionals and Emerging Leaders Happy Hour

We teamed up with AFP and CAGP’s Mentorship Program for a special Young Professionals and Emerging Leaders happy hour.

We shared deep conversations and meaningful connections at Sea Smoke Restaurant & Bar on the Halifax waterfront. It was so much fun that we’re already planning our next event!

If you have any ideas of what you’d like to see, please connect with Shay at Shaylyn.MacAulay@nscc.ca. Stay tuned for June 21st for our next session!

Mentors Needed

The Mentorship Program is always looking to pair up amazing mentors and mentees. Right now, there is a particular need for a senior fundraiser mentor.

If you have 10-15+ years in the industry and can help provide a better understanding of career pathways and overall professional development, we would love to connect!

For more information, visit Mentorship - AFP Nova Scotia Chapter or contact Whitney at whitney.machin@mscanada.ca.

New AFP Member Spotlight: Erin Dunsworth

Meet the amazing Erin Dunsworth, the Donor Experience Coordinator for The QEII Foundation in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Before joining their team, Erin worked in customer service. “Finding a career in Philanthropy has meant I am able to lead with compassion and feel fulfilled knowing my work that is making a positive and meaningful difference in the lives of my fellow Atlantic Canadians,” Erin shared. “This career path has gifted me a passion for my work and instead of dreading Monday mornings I’m excited to get my day started.”

So, why did Erin become a member with AFP Nova Scotia? “This is my first time working in the non-profit sector and I think it’s important to have as much exposure as possible to the advice, thoughts, and experiences of fundraising professionals in order to grow within my role and expand my knowledge,” Erin explained. “I’ve really enjoyed having access to so many helpful resources and talks as I learn more about Philanthropy.”

Please give a warm welcome to Erin. We are very excited to learn and grow with you.
