November 2022

Message from the president:

Hello everyone,

November marks another busy month for AFP Nova Scotia!

We started the month off with National Philanthropy Day, it was a great opportunity to connect with new and familiar faces. Thanks to our sponsor Blackbaud, we were able to offer a reduced ticket price to help make the event more widely accessible. For those who were unable to attend, the event included an amazing panel discussion about the challenges and barriers people and organizations in our sector face each day and the role that each of us can play in creating meaningful change.

Thank you to our incredible moderate DeRico Symond and panelists for sharing their perspectives and experiences:

  • Omolara Ogunbosi, Executive Director, The Africadian EmpowermentAcademy
  • Matt Thomson Co-Founder / CEO, Placemaking 4G
  • Fiona Valverde, CFRE, VP of Revenue Generation with the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21
  • Adam Langer, Director, Public Affairs, NATIONAL Public Relations
  • Lisa LaChance, MLA, Halifax Citadel-Sable Island

We will be continuing the momentum with a networking session on Thursday, November 24, 2022, we’ve partnered with CAGP Nova Scotia, Glenn Stewardson of the Donor Motivation Program, and RCR Hospitality Group, to offer another opportunity for members to connect over a beverage and good food.

We hope to see you there.

Also a special congratulations to our 2022 Chamberlain Scholar Daphne Carter. Many of you have had the opportunity to meet Daphne throughout her time as AFP Nova Scotia President and the many different roles she’s played over the years. We are so proud to have her represent our Chapter at this year’s ICON Conference.

We have a number of professional development opportunities coming up so please stay tuned to our emails to keep in the loop.

As always if you would like to get more involved in the Chapter, have a question or suggestion feel free to reach out any time, whitney.maclean@nscc.ca

With appreciation,

Implementing the IDEA Principles in Community

AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising

The East Coast of Canada is a small but very formidable fundraising community. The aphorism, “a rising tide lifts all boats” is often used to describe the importance of community care. Atlantic Canadians take pride in taking care of one another.

However, over the last three years the fundraising sector has had a wake-up call. The legacy of colonialism in Canada was front and centre with the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement and the discovery of 215 unmarked graves at the site of an Indigenous Residential School. In 2021, the Foundation for Black Communities released the Unfunded Report which noted that for every $100 donated in Canada, less than 7 cents are given to Black-led charities. The rising tide was clearly not lifting all boats.

In 2022, Sargasso Philanthropic CIC, in collaboration with AFP Nova Scotia’s education and IDEA committee, made a commitment to host AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising and provide 10 spots for candidates from the Black, Indigenous, racialized, LGBTQAI+, and disabled individuals. Sargasso’s team made a concerted effort to reach out to the local African Nova Scotian network to ensure that they were aware of this opportunity. The response from community was tremendous with all 10 spots filling up within one day with an extensive waiting list for spots.
