A Message from the president:

Happy GivingTuesday Everyone! I know this is a busy day for everyone and I wish each of you luck with your appeals.
November was a busy month for AFP with our National Philanthropy Day event, we tried something a bit different this year and hosted a coffee break in partnership with the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia. The event spurred great conversation and we were lucky to have such fantastic panelists lead us through the discussion.
We’re seeking volunteers to lead the next Maritime Fundraising Conference, the call for nominations is now open for the Chair and Vice-Chair positions. If you’re interested in shaping AFP Nova Scotia’s biggest PD event and leading a team of volunteers this could be the opportunity for you.
We’re also pleased to announce our latest scholarship recipient Thom Oommen. Thom was awarded $1,000 to attend AFP ICON – the world’s largest fundraising conference. Learn more about Thom below.
Stay tuned to our December newsletter for details on what we have coming up in the New Year.
Thank you as always for everything you do to support our sector.
Sincerely,
Whitney Maclean – President, AFP Nova Scotia

National Philanthropy Day
In partnership with the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia, we kicked off National Philanthropy Day with a captivating coffee break about mobilizing knowledge around inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility. Our panelists were incredibly inspiring and we had more than 30 people walk away feeling moved and motivated.
A special thank you to our panelists, Bernadette Hamilton-Reid, Corey Mattie, Daniel Holland, and Jeanette Doucet, for being so giving of your time and talent.
Mark your calendars for next year – November 15th!

Halifax Screening of Uncharitable and Networking Session
What if everything we’ve been taught about charitable giving is wrong? Uncharitable is a one-of-a-kind movie that shows how our charitable traditions and prejudices have suffocated the charitable sector and prevented it from leading the charge to truly change the world. This 1.5 hour film is based on the book, Uncharitable, and TED Talk by activist and fundraiser, Dan Pallotta.
AFP Nova Scotia and our Presenting Sponsor, NewGround Leadership, will host an in-person and virtual screening of Uncharitable. Our goal is to gather a group of non-profit professionals, affiliate members, NFP service providers, board members, and volunteers to join us for the Halifax screening and connect afterwards with a networking session.
We are organizing the event for January, but couldn’t wait to share the excitement with you! Please stay tuned for the date and location. Your $10 ticket will include light snacks and refreshments. If the admission fee is a barrier, a complimentary IDEA option is available for those who self-identify as being from an underserved community or for those who face other barriers, such as financial. Supporting Sponsorships at the $500 level are available, please contact Daphne Carter, dcarter@pier21.ca.
Thanks to Joanne Bath and NewGround Leadership for their support in helping to make this opportunity possible.

We are committed to awarding grant and scholarship educational opportunities for fundraising professionals in our community, for both members and non-members.
Our most recent recipient is Thom Oommen. Thom was awarded $1,000 to attend AFP ICON – the world’s largest fundraising conference.
Thom has been building community and relationships at L'Arche Cape Breton since 2012. He used to get his hands dirty in the Sunflower Garden day program, pulling carrots and picking tomatoes with L'Arche core members. Now, he's L'Arche Cape Breton's Development Coordinator, sharing the stories of people with intellectual disabilities and helping reveal their many gifts.
