October 2024

Dear Fellow Fundraisers,

Did someone shift 2024 into high gear? It seems the year is trying to close out at lightening speed!

It was a pleasure to see many of your faces at the Maritimes Fundraising Conference, presented by Global Philanthropic Canada. There were even some new ones, showing the growth of the professional fundraising sector throughout the region.

While it was a power-packed day of learning (and unlearning), the consistent theme that stuck with me throughout this year’s conference was togetherness. It was the first time we returned to more of the traditional MFC format since pre-pandemic – we were all back in person, buzzing with energy, ideas and camaraderie. That feeling was missing over these last few, ever-changing years.

Togetherness. Inclusion. Welcoming. These words mean a lot to us here at AFP Nova Scotia. Not because they are found in our IDEA work or because they are “buzz words” right now. Our board and committee members have been working hard to make these words become part of what it means to be a member of AFPNS. How are we doing? Do you feel welcomed as a member at events or in the AFPNS community? Are we representing your community? Your background? Are we helping to remove barriers that you need tackled?

PLEASE let us know by filling out the AFP IDEA Pathway Survey. https://community.afpglobal.org/afpns/afpnsideamenu/ideasurvey

We need to hear from all AFPNS members and fundraisers in our region to ensure our programming and offerings are connecting with you and the local non-profit sector as a whole. Deadline to complete this survey is October 31st so take this as your reminder to do it now. Bonus: we are offering a chance to win a $100 gift card to everyone who completed the survey.

Here’s to a fabulous fall!

Chamberlain Scholarship

The Mentorship Program offered through AFP Nova Scotia and CAGP Atlantic is designed to match a junior and seasoned fundraiser for one-on-one coaching and to learn more about the pragmatic side of fundraising. This complements the more formal professional development courses available like those offered at the Maritime Fundraising Conference. This provides an opportunity for the mentee to hone in on specific skill they wish to cultivate and allows the mentor to help advance the profession of fundraising in Nova Scotia.

AFP Diverse Communities Scholarship Program

As a community of inclusion, diversity, equity and access (IDEA), the Association of Fundraising Professionals seeks, embraces, and engages diverse individuals, groups, and organizations with a broad representation of experiences, perspectives, thoughts and cultures within the fundraising profession. Through this strategic initiative, AFP is committed to activities that increase awareness of IDEA issues. As part of this commitment, AFP Global and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy have created a scholarship program to provide financial assistance for the professional development of fundraisers who are themselves members of one or more marginalized communities. Calling all Creatives

Do you process information creatively? Then the Maritime Fundraising Conference wants to work with you! We are looking for a handful of “Idea Harvesters” who are interested in sharing their learnings from the conference through any creative medium, and allowing AFP to share it with other attendees. It could be a collection of doodles from a session you attended, a poem about your conference experience, a short video interview, a blog post . . .  the sky's the limit.
