Message from the president:

Hello Everyone,
I hope you and your loved ones are safe as I know many of our communities are still feeling the impacts of Fiona.
The board had our first meeting after the summer hiatus this September and we have a number of updates to share:
One of my main focuses as I step into the role of president is to further enhance AFP Nova Scotia’s partnerships with other Chapters and organizations with similar purposes.
With that goal in mind we held the first meeting between AFP Atlantic Chapter Presidents and President Elects, executive members from AFP Cape Breton, AFP New Brunswick and AFP Newfoundland gathered virtually to discuss opportunities for collaboration and resource sharing.
Together we realized that the four Atlantic Chapters are serving approximately 250 AFP members across the region, a significant achievement. The Chapter leaders plan to continue to meet on a quarterly basis to continue to solidify this resource sharing and deliver value to each of those members. Stay tuned for collaborative PD and networking opportunities. We are also exploring collaboration opportunities with IONS, Impaction Organizations of Nova Scotia and IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) Nova Scotia as their members have expressed an interest in skills sharing and a particular interest in fundraising professional development. We’ll keep you posted as these partnerships further develop.
As you’ll see throughout the newsletter there will be a few opportunities coming up for us to gather in person in October and November:
- We’re in the process of planning another networking session with Donor Motivation Program and CAGP, we’re hoping for an October date.
- Registration is still open for Fundamentals of Fundraising on October 1-2, this will be held in-person at the Nova Scotia SPCA office
- Young Professional (in-person) Happy Hour on October 22, details to come
- National Philanthropy Day, November 15, plans are in place for another in-person NPD event, details to come
Lots on the go and lots of opportunities to connect coming up.
We’re also accepting new volunteers to join our committees, we have a particular need for IDEA, National Philanthropy Day and Communications. If any of those opportunities seem of interest to you please don’t hesitate to reach out.
With appreciation,
Whitney MacLean
AFP Nova Scotia President

Mentees Wanted!
We are seeking mentees to match with the great mentors who have put their hand up to help provide one-on-one coaching. Here is a little about the mentors who are currently available:
One mentor has been in the sector for 20 years with experience working with higher education and with hospital foundations. This mentor is a well rounded fundraiser with experience in multitasking, public speaking, leadership, relationship building, proposal writing, and is interested in mentoring someone who would like to learn more about planned giving, donor stewardship, and major gifts.
Another mentor works with a small non-profit and has been in the sector for 15 years. This mentor has extensive experience in public speaking and conference speaking, government relations and advocacy work. Skills they can offer include raising awareness, donor relations, annual and planned giving, sponsorships, and major gifts.
Our third available mentor has been in the sector for 10 years in primarily higher education fundraising. Their experience includes annual giving, event based revenue development, engagement and stewardship, major and principal gifts, planned giving, and institutional giving. This mentor works at a large university, works to train and lead a team of fundraisers for each faculty to achieve their goals.
