Chapter President's Message
Bo Bass, MAI
|
Greetings everyone! I would like to start this message by recognizing the following newly designated members:
John Baldwin, SRA, achieved the AI-RRS designation
Taylor Malcolm achieved the MAI designation
Justin Poisson achieved the MAI designation
Mark Schwobe achieved the MAI designation
Congratulations to you all on your diligence and perseverance in obtaining these prestigious designations!
What a busy first half of the year we have had! Our leadership team’s emphasis for this year has been on educational offerings and social events. In March, we held a successful Happy Hour at Scofflaw Brewing Co. In April, we held an afternoon seminar, “Current Issues & Misconceptions in Appraisal,” developed and presented by Ted Whitmer, MAI, AI-GRS. The seminar, followed by the Q2 Chapter Business meeting, was held at Top Golf, allowing us to blend an educational offering with a social event.
State of Georgia is a newly created educational offering that was provided in May, and it was a resounding success. Our Chapter partnered with the Savannah Area Chapter to develop this seminar. Presenters included:
-
Jerry Konter, Founder and President of Konter Quality Homes and Immediate Past Chairman of the Board for the National Association of Home Builders. Konter provided an update on the single-family residential market.
-
Mark McCann, Assistant Dean of Extension, University of Georgia, who provided an update on the agricultural market.
-
Lee Beckmann, Manager of Government Affairs, Georgia Ports Authority, who provided an update on the Georgia Ports as well as inland ports.
-
Seth Millican, Executive Director of Georgia Transportation Alliance, Georgia Chamber of Commerce. Millican provided a general update on Chamber-related happenings across the state.
We appreciate the Savannah Area Chapter partnering with us to help create such a successful educational offering!

Chapter Representation
Leadership Development Advisory Council (LDAC)
This year’s LDAC was held May 17-19, once again in Washington, D.C., and the Atlanta Area Chapter was extremely well represented. David Griffin, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS; Rick Kenny, MAI, SRA; and Peter Lamas, MAI, as well as Hilary Jones, MAI, AI-GRS, CHIA of the Savannah Area Chapter, provided very solid input throughout the discussion sessions. Further, they had a successful trip lobbying on Capitol Hill meeting with the offices of Representative Barry Loudermilk (11th District), Representative Buddy Carter (1st District), Senator Raphael Warnock, and Senator Jon Ossoff. The primary focus in this year’s lobbying efforts was H.R. 2771 – Portal for Appraisal Licensing Act of 2023, a bipartisan bill which has been introduced into the House with Representative Loudermilk serving as the primary Sponsor.
LDAC side note: Many LDAC attendees and leaders from Appraisal Institute chapters across the country spoke very highly of the Atlanta Area Chapter and all that we have going on! So you should be proud of your Chapter!
As you can see, Suzanne and the rest of our incredible leadership team have worked diligently to follow through on our focus to provide Chapter members quality educational offerings and social events. I look forward to an exciting second half of the year! If you have any questions or ideas, please feel free to reach out to us. Thank you for all that you do in helping make our Chapter one of the leading Appraisal Institute Chapters across the country!
Best regards,
Bo Bass, MAI

Member Spotlight
Lamar Ellis, MAI, SRA
Employment
President of Drone Education Services and is an approved instructor for the Appraisal Institute. Lamar currently serves as President of the AUVSI (Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International) Georgia Chapter and Vice Chair of the AUVSI Chapter Council. He is also an FAA Safety Team Representative and DronePro for the State of Georgia. He currently travels the country providing education to real estate professionals on safely using drones for aerial inspections.
Duration in the profession
35 years in real estate with an emphasis on valuation.
Hometown/Currently live
Born and continues to live in Atlanta.
Family Members
Wife, Jennifer, and two teenage daughters, Haylee and Katie.
Hobbies
Drones, real estate, fishing, traveling, and adventure.
What is your primary line of appraisal work?
My focus is on aerial inspections and how they can benefit real estate professionals in data acquisition. I provide valuation services, consultation, and aerial inspection services. I also teach classes on types of drones, uses of drones, trends of drones, rules and regulations for drones, and what to do on mission days.
What are the biggest issues facing the appraisal profession?
The appraisal profession is facing several of the same problems that many companies are dealing with today, such as downsizing. Numbers are down due to fewer people entering the appraisal profession.
What do you see as the biggest strengths of the Appraisal Institute?
I think that the reduced number of Appraisal Institute members actually increases the strength of the organization. I have seen more participation in meetings, events, and social gatherings than in a decade. It’s great to see and hear the different ideas, methods, and techniques being shared once again. I am honored to be part of the Atlanta Chapter of the Appraisal Institute.

Member Spotlight
David Griffin, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS
Employment
Owner and President of Metro Appraisals based in Gainesville, GA, with a satellite office in Moultrie, GA.
Duration in the profession
I began my career at Metro Appraisals upon graduation from the University of Georgia in 2005 and purchased the company in 2013.
Hometown/Currently live
I was born and raised in Hawkinsville, GA, which is in Central Georgia near Perry and Warner Robins but have lived in Gainesville since 2006.
Family Members
I have been married to my wonderful wife, Maggie, since 2009, and we have three boys: Henry, Samuel, and John Reese.
Hobbies
I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, grilling with Meat Head Charcoal, and recreating in the mountains of North Georgia and North Carolina.
What is your primary line of appraisal work?
Our company provides both residential and commercial valuation services. We appraise residential properties throughout Metro Atlanta and North Georgia. We appraise all commercial property types throughout Georgia and contiguous states.
What are the biggest issues facing the appraisal profession?
In my opinion, finding new people to come into the industry and getting them properly trained has always been an issue and seems to be getting more difficult. Not many young professionals even know about our profession, much less understand what we do. Getting more exposure and spotlighting the positives of our profession needs to continue to be a focal point.
What do you see as the biggest strengths of the Appraisal Institute?
The networking and annual education events that are afforded via the Appraisal Institute and our local chapter is by far the biggest strength in my opinion. We are continuing to adapt our yearly education offerings via Zoom and in person, and I am grateful for our local leadership helping to keep us all current.

Instead of selecting and compiling data on a property, participants are provided with a subject property and data to analyze and then write the report in a limited time span of approximately two months.
