Jeremy Arp, MSW, ACSW

Executive Director, NASW-WA

(he/him)

Dear NASW-WA Members,

As I begin my term as your incoming Board President, I am filled with humility, gratitude, and a deep sense of responsibility. To those also transitioning into new roles across our association- a heartfelt welcome. Your willingness to serve and lead inspires confidence in the future of our profession. We are grateful for your energy, your vision, and your commitment to making a difference.

These are challenging times—locally, statewide, and nationally. Whether confronting political polarization, systemic inequities, the ongoing mental health crisis, or the widening gaps in access to care, our profession’s mission is more vital than ever. And it is precisely in these moments that social work shines brightest.

I recently had the honor of attending the NASW National Conference in Chicago where I was able to hear directly from thought leaders and changemakers from across the country who reinforced what we already know: the need for bold, values-driven social work leadership has never been greater. The call to action was clear- we must show up, speak out, and lead with intention.

The benefit and power of belonging to NASW-WA cannot be overstated. This professional association offers more than just resources—it offers a community and those connections are critical. The strength of our association lies in our relationships—with one another, with our communities, and with those we serve. In the face of burnout, isolation, and increasing demands, let us lean on and uplift each other. Together, we are stronger, and together, we can create meaningful change.

To every member who shows up each day with courage, compassion, and commitment: thank you. Your hard work and unwavering dedication to strengthening our communities does not go unnoticed. The road ahead may be long, but we can navigate it, together. As I look ahead to this term, I carry with me a vision of hope. Social workers have always been a light in dark times, guiding others toward healing, justice, and possibility. Let us continue to be that light. Let us lead with purpose, advocate with strength, and serve with heart.

In solidarity and service,

Danielle Flores, MSW, LICSW

Legislative Updates

State Updates

The Chapter's Legislative Action Committee (LAC) will meet each month to prepare for the 2026 Legislative Session. In August, the Chapter will host virtual and in-person opportunities to hear some of the ideas for the upcoming session including continuing work to decrease barriers to licensing, Department of Health recommendations (including further exploration of our own social work licensing board), and more. Possible in-person event locations include Tacoma, Vancouver, Spokane, and more. As the Legislative Action Committee (LAC) prepares these events, watch for "save the dates" that will be posted on social media channels and sent to members via email! The LAC will continue to update our Voter Voice website with any rules, notices and action alerts as well.

National Updates

NASW Urges States to Act After Congress Passes Harmful Budget Cuts Devastating to Families & Social Work Profession

We’re grateful for the thousands of social workers who joined our call urging lawmakers to stop the harmful House bill passed this afternoon. This destructive legislation not only impacts families and communities making it harder for people to meet their basic needs, health insurance costs, and get food and other services—but it will also make it more difficult for current social workers to pay off their student loans and for future students to choose the social work profession.

Together, let’s demand state leaders protect Medicaid, SNAP, and essential programs Congress failed to safeguard. State action can shape the future — and only by standing united can we protect health, fight poverty, and invest in communities so everyone thrives.

Meanwhile, NASW will continue to push federal lawmakers to replace cuts with policies that meet basic needs and uphold dignity for all. For more information about NASW's national advocacy efforts, visit our Advocacy page.
