Legislative Updates

State Updates

The Chapter's Legislative Action Committee (LAC) continues to meet monthly in preparation for future advocacy work. Prior to the 2026 legislative session in Washington, the LAC will host listening sessions in the fall to hear from our members about issues facing the profession across the state. Save the dates will be sent out this summer! The LAC will continue to update our Voter Voice website with any rules, notices and action alerts as well.

National Updates

New Policy and Stronger Together Websites

NASW worked to update policy resources for membership. The first change focused on updating the Policy Blueprint, outlining our public policy priorities for the 119th Congress, including advancing the social work profession, investing in children and families, and protecting Medicaid. The webpage and Blueprint can be accessed at the links below.

NASW's new Stronger Together website is up and running. This site is devoted to raising awareness about the actions the Trump Administration has taken against the federal agencies that promote the health and well-being of millions of Americans, and to helping our members mobilize to take action against these efforts.

The Crucial Role Medicaid and Social Workers Play in Providing Access to Substance Use Treatment

Medicaid has played a significant role in access to substance use and mental health treatment. Potential cuts in funding could make it harder to get necessary care. Let’s keep raising awareness about the impact this may have on the workforce and the communities we serve. (Read more)

Quality Payment Program (QPP) Guidance for Clinical Social Workers in 2025

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released updates to the Quality Payment Program, which can be found in the 2025 Physician Fee Schedule. This document provides updates specific to clinical social workers who are eligible to participate in the Quality Payment Program. (Read more)

Summary of the 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Final Rule

In late 2024, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS). This 1,348-page rule updates policies and payments for clinical social workers (CSWs) and other Medicare providers; these changes, in turn, affect health coverage for beneficiaries. Changes related to payments and other Medicare Part B policies addressed in the PFS take effect on or after January 1, 2025. (Read more)

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): Working with Children, Youth and Families

NASW partnered with the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to reduce the harms associated with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Happy Pride Month

Did you know Pride Month began as a revolt? Black and Brown trans and queer people led the charge, risking everything for freedom and dignity. That legacy matters, especially now. 2SLGBTQIA+ people are facing violence and erasure.

Affirming care saves lives. Social workers are called to act with integrity, not silence. Justice, not assimilation. You belong.

Navigating Policy Changes Related to Schools and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

The beginning of the Trump Administration started with executive orders that impact school social workers, students, and other school personnel. Included in the executive orders were policies related to immigration and deportation. The administration also cancelled a policy that previously limited immigration enforcement in schools. Discussions regarding the education system’s interactions with ICE are not new and were a part of educational conversations with the release of Project 2025. In addition, education personnel have long been a source of support to students impacted by ICE raids that occur outside of schools as well. However, the administration’s choice to change the policy on enforcement in schools brings the conversation back to the forefront of the educational community. (Read more)
