SJHS Celebrates First Posse Scholar Since 2018

Senior looks to make impact in environmental science

Victor Zuno '21 was all smiles on the night of the virtual awards ceremony in January. Knowing that he was one of only 1,000 seniors in the country to receive the prestigious Posse Scholarship was exciting.
Counselor Diane Palumbo, who Zoomed an introductory meeting between the Johnson and Zuno families, celebrates the good news with Victor Zuno.
“I still remember the night I received the call from Posse. It changed my life. I was on the verge of tears. I couldn’t believe that I had achieved such an amazing feat. Although this was a personal achievement, none of this would have been possible without the support of my family, especially my mom, and the St. Joseph family who all helped me during the process.”

Recommended by previous SJ Posse honoree Samuel Johnson, Class of 2018, Zuno demonstrated in his application the qualities Posse seeks: leadership, character and academic excellence.

The Posse Foundation provides for 100 full-scholarships to 10 colleges and universities in the nation. One of those colleges, Oblerin College and Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio, is where Zuno is headed.

“I am an aspiring engineer. Ever since I was a kid, I loved playing with Legos. Anything that involved hands-on-work that challenged me gave me an adrenaline rush. Going against the manual and building my own craft was my favorite part. I knew that whatever I was going to do in the future had to involve me using my hands and critical thinking. As I grew older, I saw the destruction we were causing to the planet. I wanted to change this but I never knew how. I felt so small in comparison to the crisis. However, while at a workshop during my summer internship at Rush Hospital, I figured out my future career: petroleum engineer. It was that even mix of my passion to revert the damage we caused and to apply my critical thinking skills. I plan on becoming a petroleum engineer to help develop better ways to extract oil from the earth and in ways that are less harmful to our environment. I want to ensure that future generations have a place to call their home. I want to be on the side of history that made a change.”

Congratulations, Victor, on an awesome achievement and a great vision!

Interest in Ancestors was Seed for Career Choice

SJHS Grad Hopes to Help Others Grow Genealogical Trees

Written by: Tony Quattrochi, Director of Alumni Relations

Patrick Maher decided to turn his passion into his livelihood.

After years of research on his family’s genealogical tree, the 2013 graduate from St. Joseph High School believed he could surprise others as much as he surprised himself.
Maher now counts approximately 1,800 offshoots in his family tree, and he is ready to help interested clients discover their forerunners through his recently launched website, FindMyAncestors (https://www.findmyancestors.info/).

“Learn about your family history, your heritage, and about your family tree, without having to subscribe to multiple sites and services,” according to the website. More important for potential clients, “We do all of the legwork and research for you,” the website proclaims.

Those curious about their antecedents may or may not be looking for what Pat has done for himself – compiling thousands of pages of photographs and information going back as far as the 1780s.

Maher began a serious quest to trace his family’s background during Christmas break his senior year at St. Joes.

“My dad comes from a large family, so I had a lot to begin with initially. I used tools that were out there and my own knowledge of other resources.”

Maher quickly learned valuable lessons to aid his search.

“The amount of information available to the public is incredible. You just have to know where to look.”

What Maher finds especially intriguing about genealogy is that...READ MORE
