I Read the News Today, Oh Boy!

What happens when a news organization gets the word that a project exists benefitting persons experiencing homelessness AND veterans? Well, in the case of WPMT, Fox43, or WHTM, ABC27, you feature it in a broadcast. Jason Seaux and Pat LaMarche appeared in stories about the upcoming Invisible comic book. Beyond being a great story in its own right, you may also learn intriguing details behind the comic that will be news to you. Where did the idea for Invisible's inception come from? Why is the superhero of the comic a veteran? What is the projected "official" national release date for the comic? Why is this project even being done in a comic book medium?

One important question not directly addressed in the newscast is, why is the superhero of the comic Invisible? For that answer, we go to co-writer Phil LaMarche, who explained his thought process in creating Mack, “Made sense to me that his superpower would be invisibility. I figured, and Patty confirmed it, if an unhoused vet wants to stay hidden, you definitely won’t see him. People don’t really see folks on the street anyway. But these guys know how to take cover and hide.”

For the answers to all of the other questions posed in this piece, click the links below. Not only will you find those details, but you will also enjoy the experience of something quite rare in today's world. Good news! In the immortal words of Kurt Vonnegut, "If this isn't nice, I don't know what is."

What the Babes of Wrath Wrought
Dismazed and Left Out '21
The Babes of Wrath haven't even set out on their September tour of America's southwest, but their impact is already being felt. How, do you ask? For one, it has significantly increased sales of available Priscilla books. Over 400 books were sold just last week, and a reprint of the first book in the series had to be ordered. This is vital to providing young people with realistic views about persons experiencing homelessness, thus shaping the next generation of empathetic adults. To further that goal, the Babes are encouraging masking for children according to guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). As you know, unvaccinated children in school are at greater risk all the time. This issue has become so important that Max Donnelly's new artwork (featured above) is being put on new masks.

During their tour, they will be handing out information on how food banks can help get kids enrolled in the McKinney Vento Programs, removing barriers for children to go to school. To learn more about what the Babes of Wrath are getting up to, join their Facebook page on the link below.
Blanket Coverage
Homeless Blanket Project Example 02
Although the need for art is central to the mission of The Charles Bruce Foundation (hence the acronym "WAM" for writers, artists, and musicians prominently featured in marketing campaigns), using art to expose and provide for the needs of the community at large is critical to what we do. It is also important in what we ask YOU, no matter where you live, be it Indiana, Arkansas, Hawaii, or some other part of the country, to do as supporters. We are privileged that the First United Church of Christ has volunteered to store blankets mailed from across the country in preparation for the blanket art installation at Memorial Park on Carlisle Square on December 21st discussed in last month's newsletter. This means that you can begin knitting, crocheting, assembling, donating yarn, or assisting in any way with the event, now! The goal for the project is a lofty 200 blankets, of which approximately 90 have been claimed. Wherever you are, this leaves you with a beautiful opportunity to lend your artistic talents to the project while providing much-needed warmth for persons experiencing homelessness. Please join the Homeless Memorial Blanket Project Facebook group at the link below to refresh you on the project details.
