Southern Maryland Bluegrass Series Starts Back November 5
Fall and Winter times are coming and it’s time for the all-new Southern Maryland Bluegrass Concert Series to begin. The shows that are sure to be an influence on the new generation of Bluegrass pickers in Southern Maryland. It will be held at the Calvert Elks Lodge #2620 located at 1015 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick, MD.
Starting the series on November 5, 2023, will feature some upcoming women in Bluegrass music. The Price Sisters from Kentucky, recording for Del McCoury’s record label, have become one of the most promising acts in Bluegrass music today. With a playing style of the likes of Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, the twin sisters Lauren and Leanna Price are becoming the torchbearers for Bluegrass music as it enters its eighth decade. While their playing is strongly rooted in the classic Bluegrass style, their smooth, polished sibling harmonies infuse the music with a fresh, contemporary appeal.
Growing up, their parents sang traditional and old-time country songs and as the sisters grew up hearing duet harmony, they naturally became accustomed to singing together themselves. For their eighth birthday, Lauren and Leanna were gifted instruments. They began taking lessons within a year or so afterwards, though they didn't take an interest in bluegrass music until their mid-high school years. The girls then began attending as many festivals and workshops as possible. In the spring of 2016, Leanna and Lauren signed to Rebel Records and recorded and released an EP that August. They then began to pursue touring professionally as The Price Sisters. They now perform at many venues and festivals across the United States as well as in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Canada. The Sisters released their first full-length album for Rebel Records, "A Heart Never Knows," in the spring of 2018 and in 2019 hired their first full-time touring band.
While Lauren and Leanna front the band and recognized for their twin-sister harmony singing, the girls are supported by accomplished musicians in their own right. They are young multi-instrumentalists and vocalists that bring a fresh, innovative sound. Lauren is a five-time instructor at the Monroe Mandolin Camp. She is an “in-demand” instructor at many music camps across North America, such as Del Fest Academy, Camp Bluegrass, and more. Leanna has been a featured artist in Fiddler Magazine, Mandolin Café, and is a frequent fiddler on WSM's Grand Ole Opry. Banjo player Trevor Holder has been awarded first prize at the Old Fiddlers' Convention in Galax, VA, in 2019. Bobby Osborne Jr on bass is no stranger to bluegrass and country music, having made his career playing music with his father, Bobby Osborne of the famed Osborne Brothers. Guitarist, Conner Vlietstra, is an award-winner on several instruments.
They have been featured in No Depression magazine, Paste Magazine, For Folk's Sake, The Bluegrass Situation, and heard on The Eddie Stubbs Show. They received the “highlighting” review in Bluegrass Unlimited magazine on their 2 Rebel CD’s. Lauren and Leanna have been “Artists in Residence” for the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Owensboro, KY, performing bluegrass music programming across 24 area elementary schools. The group has also been featured at ROMP, Del Fest, the University of Chicago's Folklife Festival, and Bean Blossom. Presently, The Price Sisters have signed on to McCoury Music and are anticipating their first record for the label, produced by Ronnie McCoury, to be released this year.
