Congratulations to Esther Bonney, a member of our very own CCYO, for her remarkable achievement in winning the Cosmic Symphony Young Artist Competition, Junior Division. It's truly an honor for her to be selected as a soloist for the upcoming Cosmic Symphony concerts. Her talent and dedication have been recognized, and it's well-deserved. The performances at the Dodge Performing Arts Center and Southern High School are sure to be memorable occasions, and Esther's violin solo will undoubtedly be a highlight. Additionally, receiving a cash prize is a testament to her hard work and skill. This is a significant milestone in her musical journey, and I'm sure she will continue to excel in her future endeavors.

LITERATURE

Southern Maryland Chain (MD) Chapter 2024 Young Masters Writers and Artists Program Competition

The Young Masters Writers and Artists Program Competition seeks to acknowledge the vital role of the arts in our society by encouraging and supporting our youth as they explore and develop their artistic gifts and talents. To compete, high school students may submit original and unpublished works of poetry and prose or showcase talent in dance, music, drama or spoken word within the following rules and guidelines. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 winners of the competition.

The deadline for submissions is February 16, 2024, by midnight (EST). Cash prizes are awarded to the three top winners in the amounts of $300, $200, and $150, respectively.

The Charles County Chapter of the Maryland Writers Association assists new and established writers from the basics of the craft, editing, traditional and self-publication, marketing and many other aspects of writing. The Chapter coordinates book signings at various events throughout the year, and coordinated writing events to the Mattawoman Creek Art Center. The Chapter meets at Christ Church, 112 Charles Street, La Plata at 6 PM every third Wednesday of the month for a Critique Group, followed by a business meeting and writing prompts at 7 PM.

COMMUNITY, HERITAGE, & CULTURAL ARTS

The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) is seeking panelists for the Folklife Network program. The program funds organizations housing regional folklife centers, or continuing programmatic or educational efforts made in support of the traditional arts (defined as community-based living cultural traditions handed down by example or word of mouth).

MSAC relies on a wide array of experts from across the state to do the important work of evaluating applications. MSAC selects Folklife Network panelists with a focus on diversity of experiences, diversity of location, and expertise in the traditional arts. Panelists must be Maryland residents.

About the Charles County Arts Alliance, Inc.

The mission of the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) is to stimulate, promote, encourage, and provide recognition of the arts and the creative spirit. Founded in 1987, the CCAA promotes ALL the arts in Charles County: music, visual art, drama, dance and literature.

The CCAA is the official arts council of Charles County and is recognized as such by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), an agency of the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) of the State of Maryland. In this capacity, the CCAA serves as the "umbrella" organization for the arts community in Charles County. The CCAA promotes Charles County arts organizations and individuals, provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and the schools through its annual arts grant programs, sponsors the creation and presentation of new, diverse cultural activities and special events for the community, provides arts scholarships, and ensures the Charles County's under-served population, people with disabilities, residents with limited income, minorities, and senior citizens have access to the arts. The CCAA builds partnerships with local government, the business community and the educational community, in an effort to enhance the overall quality of life for the citizens of Charles County.
