Roland Flint – Maryland Poet Laureate 1995-2000 Author: Roland Flint Genre: Poetry "My poems are accessible at the first level of understanding. They're user friendly." – Roland Flint Roland Henry Flint, born February 27, 1934, was an American poet, professor of English at Georgetown University for 29 years, and Poet Laureate of Maryland.
He was born in Park River, North Dakota, flunked out of the University of North Dakota, and joined the United States Marine Corps. While serving in post-war Korea he decided college would give him a better life and returned to and graduated from the University of North Dakota. This was followed by an M.A. in English from Marquette University and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. It was here he began to publish his poetry. When asked about his poetry he said, "My poems are accessible at the first level of understanding. They're user friendly." He tried to put on paper "common feelings, captured in uncommon language." Colleagues said Flint "loved to explore the frailties and surprising strengths of characters most would call 'losers,' noting the capacity for nobility in unexpected places.” Flint was Poet Laureate of Maryland from 1995-2000. Maryland Gov. Parris N. Glendening said of Flint, "For five years, he traveled to schools in every area of the state, especially those that could not afford a full-time poetry program, and helped students understand the value of poetry." Flint’s school visits were powerful due to the vast store of poems he had memorized and could recite at the drop of a hat as well as his speaking ability that mesmerized his audiences. He resigned from the position due to poor health and died of pancreatic cancer on January 2, 2001 at the age of 66 in his home in Kensington. Genre: Poetry – Poetry is a form of literature that evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience or a specific emotional response through language chosen and arranged for its meaning, sound, and rhythm. Sample Reading List: And Morning; Say It; Resuming Green: Selected Poems 1965-1982; Stubborn; Pigeon; Easy; The Honey and Other Poems for Rosalind. Fun With Words - Maryland Writers’ Association (MWA) invites you to have fun being a poet like Roland Flint. Using up to 100 words, write a poem showing the common feelings and surprising strengths of characters most would call ‘losers’. Title your work and submit to: https://marylandwriters.org/Notable_Maryland_Authors by the 22nd of the month to receive an MWA Fun With Words submission certificate. Selected responses will be published with next month’s article and on the MWA Website. Howard County Poetry and Literary Society The MWA is a 31-year-old state-wide association (501c3) dedicated to encouraging and mentoring Maryland writers, poets, playwrights, and authors.
