Come out and bring your comfortable dancing shoes!
- The dances are held at Christ Church parish hall, 37497 Zach Fowler Road, Chaptico, MD.
- Lessons for new or inexperienced dancers begin at 7PM.
- Admission $12.00, members $8.00, children age 17 and under are free but must be accompanied by an adult.
- Water is provided, but feel free to bring a refillable bottle to stay hydrated. There will be an ice cream social during the intermission.

Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.

HULBERT FOOTNER

Hulbert Footner (April 2, 1879 – November 17, 1944) was a Canadian born, American writer who was predominantly self-educated and wrote both adventure stories and detective fiction. He loved to live outdoors and canoe, and a trip gone bad made him a Maryland fan. On a trip to paddle the Chesapeake Bay in 1910, he encountered bad weather at Baltimore and ended up taking a steamboat to Solomons, Maryland and was hooked. He married a local lady, Ms. Gladius March, and in 1915 bought Preston on the Patuxent, in Lusby, MD, which he renamed Charles Gift and where he lived until he died in 1944.
He wrote his first novel, Two on the Trail, at Solomons in 1911. It’s a fictional adventure based upon the 3,000-mile canoe trip he made alone through Northern Alberta in 1906. Immediately afterwards, he made another canoe trip through the Northwest Territory going from Portrait by Mabel Welch British Columbia Through Alberta and into the Territory of MacKenzie from which he wrote, Jack Chanty.
A friend, Christopher Morley, suggested Footner shift to crime fiction. As Footner recalled, “Morley steered me past an overdose of northwestern stories into crime stories, adventure and romance.” Footner’s Madame Rozika Storey and her plain assistant, set in the flapper era of the 1920’s, became his most successful detective character. His first romantic novel, Country Love, is set on board Adams Floating Theater, which sailed the Chesapeake Bay bringing plays and vaudeville acts to the isolated villages including Solomons, Maryland during the years after World War I. In 1930, Footner introduced a new detective, Amos Lee Mappin, whose crimes tend to occur in New York's cafe society.
He wrote, Maryland Main and the Eastern Shore, (illustrated by Louis Ruyl), a chapter by chapter study of Maryland through his eyes and impressions as an outsider, as he was dying. Critics consider it an accurate capture of the essence of Maryland. Footner is buried at Middleham Chapel, Lusby, MD.

The Charles County Chapter of the Maryland Writers Association assists new and established writers from the basics of the craft, editing, traditional and self-publication, marketing and many other aspects of writing. The Chapter coordinates book signings at various events throughout the year, and coordinated writing events to the Mattawoman Creek Art Center. The Chapter meets at Christ Church, 112 Charles Street, La Plata at 6 PM every third Wednesday of the month for a Critique Group, followed by a business meeting and writing prompts at 7 PM.

ABOUT JULIAN BERKOWITZ:
Julian Berkowitz is a drummer and educator residing in Washington, DC. Rooted in the deep tradition of American jazz, fusion, funk, and the rhythms of Brazil, Julian has quickly become one of the DC area’s most in-demand drummers. The son of a Jewish-American father and Brazilian mother, Julian was born and raised in the small town of Easton, Connecticut.
His first experience with the drums began at the age of 5, when he discovered the pots and pans in the kitchen doubled as a makeshift drum kit. In sixth grade, middle school band director and drummer Robert LaValle noticed Julian’s talent on the drums and became his first drum instructor, introducing him to funk and jazz music for the first time.

About the Charles County Arts Alliance, Inc.
The mission of the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) is to stimulate, promote, encourage, and provide recognition of the arts and the creative spirit. Founded in 1987, the CCAA promotes ALL the arts in Charles County: music, visual art, drama, dance and literature.
The CCAA is the official arts council of Charles County and is recognized as such by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), an agency of the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) of the State of Maryland. In this capacity, the CCAA serves as the "umbrella" organization for the arts community in Charles County. The CCAA promotes Charles County arts organizations and individuals, provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and the schools through its annual arts grant programs, sponsors the creation and presentation of new, diverse cultural activities and special events for the community, provides arts scholarships, and ensures the Charles County's under-served population, people with disabilities, residents with limited income, minorities, and senior citizens have access to the arts. The CCAA builds partnerships with local government, the business community and the educational community, in an effort to enhance the overall quality of life for the citizens of Charles County.
