Now Accepting Applications for the CCAA Arts Scholarship

Each year the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) awards $1,500.00 scholarships to one outstanding graduating senior from each high school in Charles County and one graduating Charles County student from St. Mary’s Ryken High School, who plan to continue studying the arts (performing, visual, or literary) at a four-year college or university.
Apply at www.charlescountyarts.org/program/scholarships. The completed application and all required documentation must be mailed to CCAA: PO Box 697, White Plains, MD 20695 or hand-delivered to the CCAA office at the Dorothy L. Harper United Way House: 10250 La Plata Road, La Plata, MD 20646. Applications received or postmarked after the deadline will not be accepted and must be received by noon March 4, 2022.

The Young Composers Project
Call for Compositions Deadline: April 1st
The project supports Maryland music educators in their efforts to incorporate the National Standards for Music Education and the Maryland State Music Standards in their classrooms and rehearsals.
The project is designed to encourage and enhance the instructional experiences of Maryland school students and music educators through providing professional critiques, enhanced recognition and selected presentations for the ongoing creative work of students in Maryland schools.
The submission window for all compositions closes on April1st, 2022 at 11:59 pm.

ACTORS NEEDED!
2 young men to play brothers, ages 18-25
and a middle aged woman to play their mother.
Our film schedule at the moment is Mondays and Wednesdays, but it can be flexible if needed. This would be a great opportunity for anyone interested to add this film to their portfolio, as well. The film would need to be done by the end of February, so the earlier we can audition, the earlier we can film!

The Charles County Arts Alliance is getting ready for ArtsFest 2022 this summer and is calling for all artist and vendors!
ArtsFest 2022 will be happening on the grounds of La Plata Town Hall on Saturday, June 11th, 2022 from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Visitors can browse food trucks, enjoy first-rate performances, and purchase original works by local artists.

Colored Pencil Transparent/Reflection Vase on Black Paper
2 days, Wednesday and Thursday, March 9th & 10th from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Fee: $199.00 (Includes both days) Registration with payment due before March 1st.

Color against a rich, black background can be mesmerizing – the colors just seem to appear and disappear into the blackness, and bright colors are made to look even brighter due to the extreme contrast. Creating those effects with colored pencil can be something of a challenge, due to the medium’s lack of opacity. When a subject calls for maximum brightness, the challenge is increased, but Amy Lindenberger has worked successfully with a range of techniques to help achieve maximum brightness in colored pencil against a black background. The Gerber Daisy that will be the subject of this class calls for a black, sanded surface as a starting place, so that all of the color will rest on the surface rather than settling into paper fibers. Then, using a reverse grisaille under painting of White pencil and layering the most opaque color options, the results will showcase the contrast of the rich black of the surface with the intense color of the flower.
Amy uses Prismacolor colored pencils on black paper. Paper is provided for you and a list of all pencil colors and supplies will be emailed to you after registering with payment.

The Charles County chapter of the Maryland Writers’ Association
provides support to aspiring and established writers in all aspects of the craft, including basic writing, editing, beta readers and critiques, publishing, and marketing. We also set up periodic book signing events, though these are largely on hold due to the pandemic. Our monthly meetings cover where we all are on our literary journey, guest speakers, upcoming events, and opportunities for submission. Our chapter meets virtually the third Wednesday of each month, with a critique group from 6PM to 7PM, followed by a business meeting, speakers and writing prompts from 7-8:30PM. About the Charles County Arts Alliance, Inc.
The mission of the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) is to stimulate, promote, encourage, and provide recognition of the arts and the creative spirit. Founded in 1987, the CCAA promotes ALL the arts in Charles County: music, visual art, drama, dance and literature.
The CCAA is the official arts council of Charles County and is recognized as such by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), an agency of the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) of the State of Maryland. In this capacity, the CCAA serves as the "umbrella" organization for the arts community in Charles County. The CCAA promotes Charles County arts organizations and individuals, provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and the schools through its annual arts grant programs, sponsors the creation and presentation of new, diverse cultural activities and special events for the community, provides arts scholarships, and ensures the Charles County's under-served population, people with disabilities, residents with limited income, minorities, and senior citizens have access to the arts. The CCAA builds partnerships with local government, the business community and the educational community, in an effort to enhance the overall quality of life for the citizens of Charles County.
