EVANS THORNE ARTSFEST FEATURED ARTIST
Evans Thorne was born and grew up in Trinidad West Indies. After high school, he worked for the Government of Trinidad and saved money to come to the USA to study art. He attended Northern Virginia Community College in Virginia and Howard University in Washington, D. C. and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BFA in Painting. After college, he returned to Trinidad and taught Art and Craft at Belmont Junior Secondary (a middle school) for two years before returning to the USA. He is influenced by African art, Japanese paintings, Middle Eastern designs, Impressionist European art, and the colors and patterns of African American art. He has exhibited his art in Trinidad and the USA from 1977 to 1982 and from 2017 to 2020. He uses acrylics and mixed media to create colorful scenes of the folk culture of the Caribbean. He is a member of Black Artists of DC.

Enter Beth Bailey, Suzannah’s newly-hired assistant, a highly-motivated daughter of the South. To Suzannah’s delight, Beth explodes into the Hayden household and whips it into an organized, well-run machine. As Suzannah’s dependence on Beth grows and Gibby’s dislike of the woman deepens, Suzannah gives Beth carte blanche to change anything in the household that “will make it run more efficiently.” When Gibby realizes it’s Suzannah’s career Beth is really after he sets out to save his marriage and Suzannah’s job. James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching.
The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.
One of Sondheim's most popular works, Into the Woods is a musically sophisticated show with the opportunity to feature actors adept at dark comedy. Designers will especially enjoy highlighting the fantastical elements of this magical word.

SMTMD CONTRA DANCE
CHAPTICO, MD
SATURDAY, June 10th • 7 PM
The 2nd Saturday of the month September through June at the Christ Church Parish Hall, 37497 Zach Fowler Rd, Chaptico, MD. The evening starts at 7 pm with a half hour beginner’s dance workshop followed by live music performed by the SOMD Open Band and dancing from 7:30 to 10 pm.

Is your child a budding artist with a passion for Kawaii and Anime? Look no further than the Upward Thrive Academy Kawaii & Anime Art Summer Camp! Youth ages 7-17 are welcome to join us for a week of creativity, fun, and adventure as we explore the world of Japanese art and culture through a kawaii and anime lens.
From drawing and painting to sculpture and 3D printing, our camp will introduce campers to a variety of artistic styles and genres. All artwork will reflect positive themes. Campers will have the opportunity to display their work at The UTA Kawaii & Anime Art Exhibit.

JUNE 2023 NOTABLE AUTHOR:
LAURA AMY SCHLITZ
Laura Amy Schlitz was born and raised in the Baltimore area and graduated from Hereford High School in Parkton. She then attended Goucher College, graduating in 1977 with a degree in aesthetics, a major she designed herself. Her dream was to be an actress, but it didn’t work for her so she took a job with the Enoch Pratt Library - Fells Point branch.
There she excelled at telling children’s stories, probably because it was similar to acting. Then a friend asked her to write an adaptation of Beauty and the Beast for the Children’s Theater Association. Schlitz completed the adaptation in 10 days. The compliments she received for the script turned on a light in her and she realized she was a writer, not an actress.

The Charles County Chapter of the Maryland Writers Association assists new and established writers from the basics of the craft, editing, traditional and self-publication, marketing and many other aspects of writing. The Chapter coordinates book signings at various events throughout the year, and coordinated writing events to the Mattawoman Creek Art Center. The Chapter meets at Christ Church, 112 Charles Street, La Plata at 6 PM every third Wednesday of the month for a Critique Group, followed by a business meeting and writing prompts at 7 PM.

About the Charles County Arts Alliance, Inc.
The mission of the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) is to stimulate, promote, encourage, and provide recognition of the arts and the creative spirit. Founded in 1987, the CCAA promotes ALL the arts in Charles County: music, visual art, drama, dance and literature.
The CCAA is the official arts council of Charles County and is recognized as such by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), an agency of the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) of the State of Maryland. In this capacity, the CCAA serves as the "umbrella" organization for the arts community in Charles County. The CCAA promotes Charles County arts organizations and individuals, provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and the schools through its annual arts grant programs, sponsors the creation and presentation of new, diverse cultural activities and special events for the community, provides arts scholarships, and ensures the Charles County's under-served population, people with disabilities, residents with limited income, minorities, and senior citizens have access to the arts. The CCAA builds partnerships with local government, the business community and the educational community, in an effort to enhance the overall quality of life for the citizens of Charles County.
