CCYO Student Wins Cosmic Symphony Young Artist Competition
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
The Charles County Youth Orchestra is proud to announce that Esther Bonney, Charles County Youth Orchestra’s Concertmaster, has won the Cosmic Symphony Young Artist Competition, Junior Division. As the winner she will perform as violin soloist at the Cosmic Symphony concerts on March 2 at the Dodge Performing Arts Center at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and on March 3 at Southern High School in Harwood. She will receive a cash prize as well.
The Cosmic Symphony Young Artist Competition is an annual competition open to all residents of Maryland.
Ms. Bonney has been a member of CCYO for four years, she won the Charles County Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition in 2021 and performed as soloist with CCYO in 2022. In addition, she has been heard at many of CCYO’s chamber music concerts throughout the region.
The Chamber Orchestra of Southern Maryland in Concert (COSMIC) is Southern Maryland’s only community orchestra and affords residents the opportunity to enjoy high quality orchestral music without leaving Southern Maryland.
CCYO presents two large concerts and numerous smaller concerts each year, a two-week Chamber Music Festival, a Concerto Competition Concert as well as masterclasses and sectionals for students in all four of CCYO’s ensembles. This past season CCYO ensembles have performed at the Port Tobacco Courthouse, Alice Ferguson Foundation, Nanjemoy Community Center, Kris Kringle at the Fairgrounds, Indian Head Village Green and at Christ Church, La Plata where they performed a very successful concert to raise funds for victims of the Turkey-Syria Earthquake.
Recently, CCYO has been spotlighted in an online film by the Charles County Arts Alliance and has been featured on WTOP radio. Also, two CCYO String Quartets were finalists in the prestigious Washington Performing Arts Society Misbin Chamber Music Competition in Washington, D.C. CCYO is one of the largest youth organizations in Southern Maryland, providing music education and performance opportunities for talented young musicians ages 8 to 18 in Charles, Prince George’s, St. Mary’s, and Calvert counties.
The Charles County Youth Orchestra is sponsored in part by grants from the Charles County Arts Alliance, the Charles County Charitable Trust, the Maryland State Arts Council, the Rotary Club of Charles County, MD, and the Knights of Columbus of Accokeek, MD. Other major contributors include Potters Violins, Gailes Violin Shop, and the Neighborhood Creative Arts Center of La Plata as well as generous donations from individuals.

Willy Loman is a salesman. For more than three decades, he has traveled the roads between his home in New York City and the cities and towns of New England, plying a route for the same company more or less successfully. Now, late in his life, Willy’s sales are flagging, and the firm is trying in a not-very-subtle way to push him out the door. Meanwhile, relationships with his two sons, Biff and Happy, are being affected by the fact that they are not as successful as he hoped they would be – although he strives to convince them and himself that they are all doing just fine.

Post-World War II SFC (Ret.) Walter D. Medley, Jr., now ninety-four, teamed with author and print journalist Yvonne J. Medley (no relation, perhaps) to write this untold story of American History--the role that All-Negro Army Bands and Honor Guard played to help win a second term for President Harry S. Truman and support to desegregate the military; a Black soldier's navigation of Jim Crow racism in both the military and in American society; and the tender story of love, faith, and perseverance of a New England African American family that can trace its roots from slavery to present day. It's a historical memoir. Also, as a young man, Mr. Medley fell in love and married a German woman, Irene Meyer. While the marriage was short-lived (because his wife did not want to leave Germany), the two became loving parents of a beautiful baby girl (Geraldine, named after Mr. Walter's brother). Their love story reveals much about the U.S. Army and the racial climate of the day. However, not until Mr. Medley was in his eighties would he discover he had also fathered a son, then dubbed a Brown Baby (German babies sired by African American soldiers and German women). Ironically, it was a son he had always wanted but had unknowingly left behind. Today, father and son and grandson have a forging relationship. Mr. Medley's historical memoir chronicles his life placement during momentous events in American and European history, special family moments, his loves-his nearly 50-year marriage to the late Anna May Taliaferrow Medley, and his new beginnings with his present wife, Sharon LeCompt Medley. All in all, Mr. Medley shares intricate details of the Greatest Generation that Saved the World! During the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, Mr. Medley and Journalist/Author Yvonne J. Medley penned his story. Both are thankful for the assistance of the Medley-Lipscomp Family, the Life Journeys Writers Guild, Inc., Genealogist Victoria Robinson, and Maryland and Virginia's Congressional Delegation and the Veteran's History Project to share this rich American History-untold! | |

The Charles County Chapter of the Maryland Writers Association assists new and established writers from the basics of the craft, editing, traditional and self-publication, marketing and many other aspects of writing. The Chapter coordinates book signings at various events throughout the year, and coordinated writing events to the Mattawoman Creek Art Center. The Chapter meets at Christ Church, 112 Charles Street, La Plata at 6 PM every third Wednesday of the month for a Critique Group, followed by a business meeting and writing prompts at 7 PM.

About the Charles County Arts Alliance, Inc.
The mission of the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) is to stimulate, promote, encourage, and provide recognition of the arts and the creative spirit. Founded in 1987, the CCAA promotes ALL the arts in Charles County: music, visual art, drama, dance and literature.
The CCAA is the official arts council of Charles County and is recognized as such by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), an agency of the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) of the State of Maryland. In this capacity, the CCAA serves as the "umbrella" organization for the arts community in Charles County. The CCAA promotes Charles County arts organizations and individuals, provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and the schools through its annual arts grant programs, sponsors the creation and presentation of new, diverse cultural activities and special events for the community, provides arts scholarships, and ensures the Charles County's under-served population, people with disabilities, residents with limited income, minorities, and senior citizens have access to the arts. The CCAA builds partnerships with local government, the business community and the educational community, in an effort to enhance the overall quality of life for the citizens of Charles County.
