Charleston Port Expansion: What It Means for South Carolina and the Upstate
After more than a decade of planning and development, the Charleston Port has officially become the deepest harbor on the East Coast. The harbor now measures 52 feet deep, expanded from 45 feet, a project that took 12 years to complete. This milestone isn’t just about Charleston. It’s a game-changer for the entire state, including the Upstate.
Why This Matters
The deeper harbor means Charleston can now handle the largest ships in the world, fully loaded, regardless of tides. For global trade, that makes Charleston one of the most competitive and efficient ports in the U.S.
But the benefits don’t stop at the coast. The Upstate’s economy is tied closely to the ports; 1 out of every 7 jobs in the Upstate contributes directly or indirectly to South Carolina’s ports. From manufacturing and logistics to retail and agriculture, businesses depend on the seamless flow of goods through Charleston.
The Economic Impact
South Carolina Ports already generate a staggering $63+ billion annual economic impact for the state. As global trade grows and larger ships call on Charleston, those numbers are expected to climb. For the Upstate, this means more opportunities for investment, stronger supply chains, and continued growth in industrial real estate.
The ports’ strength is already visible in their performance. In fiscal year 2025, SC Ports moved 2.6 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), a 3% year-over-year increase. That growth signals strong demand and reinforces the ports’ role as an economic engine for South Carolina.
What It Means for the Upstate
For businesses and communities across the Upstate, the Charleston Port expansion ensures better access to global markets and increased competitiveness for local industries. Whether it’s BMW exporting vehicles worldwide or small manufacturers shipping products across the U.S., the deeper harbor strengthens the entire supply chain.
Looking Ahead
The completion of this 12-year project is more than an infrastructure upgrade, it’s a long-term investment in South Carolina’s future. With the deepest harbor on the East Coast, Charleston is positioned to be a leading gateway for global commerce, and the ripple effects will be felt throughout the Upstate for decades to come.
