Dear Tim,
Northern Kentucky Fly Fisher member Charlie Meyer died on February 14, 2023. NKFF has lost a champion who despite his physical handicaps was a shining star among leaders and volunteers throughout his membership.
Charlie Meyer was a long time member of the Board of Directors of NKFF and his wife Sheila Meyer is a current member of the BOD and was President of NKFF from 2020-2022.
Charlie and Sheila won the Mike Arnold Fly Fisher of the Year Award in 2015.
In 2014, they were in Bass Pro Shops trying to decide on a sport they could enjoy together and decided on fly fishing. They joined NKFF that year and immersed themselves in the activities offered by the club immediately.
They took the beginning fly tying classes with Aaron McDaniel and Mike Arnold every year until they felt comfortable helping out as volunteers.
Fly casting and fishing became their passion. Charlie routinely helped out at fly fishing classes. He also loved kids fishing derbies and was a consistent volunteer at these events.
Charlie had to have several amputations because of complications from diabetes, but in spite of this, Charlie was committed to getting disabled veterans out fishing through NKFF's involvement with Project Healing Waters. Charlie was always there with the vets including their trip to Sandusky and experienced great joy through these experiences.
Jerry Benson was Charlie's best friend and they fished together frequently. Trips to the Cumberland River, Elkhorn Creek, Hot Springs, North Carolina and many more. Jerry was known as the fish whisperer to both Charlie and Sheila.
Charlie and Sheila also ventured with NKFF to Yellowstone Anglers' Basecamp in Wyoming a few years ago.
Charlie was an inspiration to many of us. His level of volunteerism was an example to all that giving back is an important part of life. We will miss him very much.
There will be a celebration of Charlie's life held this spring and the date/time and place will be announced when available.
If you would like to send Sheila a note you may do so HERE.
