Greetings!

In the last couple of newsletters we've been discussing casting director's pet peeves. Last issue we wrote that the number one issue is actors showing up without a headshot and resume and otherwise unprepared. Actually, almost worse than not having a headshot is having one that doesn't look like you. Most of the time you're given an audition because you fit the description of the character you'll be auditioning for. The casting director or director goes on line and looks for actors who fit the character description given in the breakdown for the project. That's why it's important to keep your pictures current. (As an aside, I'm absolutely amazed at how many people register on the Media Casting Group website and never post a picture! Then they wonder why they never get called.) There's very little that's more irritating than calling someone in and not having them look like what we were expecting from their picture. If you change your hair style, length or color, gain or lose a significant amount of weight, get a nose job or do something else that dramatically changes your appearance, get new pictures! Fortunately most initial casting is done on line nowadays. When I was in LA I used to go through 1000 to 1500 headshots every year! Now you only need to take them with you for an actual audition. Remember too, no one cares how much you spent on your headshots; we just need to recognize you when you walk into the room.

More on the subject of pet peeves next time.  I hope this has been helpful.
Until then,
Charlie

To be accepted for this class you should have completed a MOSAIC ACTING class, or Charlie must be acquainted with your work or other training as an actor. Preregistration required, and the class will be held if a minimum of eight students enroll. A maximum of ten students will be accepted. Tuition for this 10 week course is $400. Harold and Maude opened the weekend to standing ovations. Christopher Celestin and Hazel Johnson are excellent as Harold and Maude.

Hazel Johnson, an octogenarian who defies the implications of that title, plays her wonderfully eccentric, Pollyanna-ish character to perfection (and) Chris Celestin initially plays a sardonic character, and a lot of the comedy in the show comes from his comic instincts and subtle gestures. Over the course of the play, this versatile young actor demonstrates a lot of emotional range. --Dick Frantzreb, Great Local Shows Blog

THEATER AUDITIONS
AUDITIONS FOR "AFTER HOURS"
Strangers brought together by relatives with cancer spend a momentous evening together at their local hangout, After Hours. One will loose a loved one, one celebrates the loss of a loved one, one gets to take a loved one home, and one leads them all through their grief or happiness, but she's the one who needs their love and guidance the most."

This show was produced at Theatre 68 in LA two years ago, with a decent and what I thought was an accurate review. Since then, I have revised the play, and did a reading of it with the Playwright's Collaborative here in Sacramento with encouraging results. I'm excited to put this show up again, with the new revisions that have given it strength and depth.

Here is the breakdown: ALL ROLES ARE OPEN EHTNICITY

RILEY - mid to late 20's, bartender, father is dying of cancer. He has a growing frustration with being Nola's boy toy. He watches others with a steady and penetrating stare that is often disconcerting.

NOLA - mid to late 30's, volunteer at the hospital in the cancer ward. A care taker to those she meets, never thinking she deserves to be cared for herself.

GEORGIE - late 60's- early 70's or over, has just had to move his wife to hospice after her fight with cancer has been deemed lost. He's Eeyore's prototype.

VIRGINIA - late 20s, or 30/40, whose sister has been facing a loosing battle against cancer. She's tough, sexy and attracted to the often sexually inappropriate Duncan, but hasn't pursued it. Yet.

DUNCAN - late 20s, 30s or early 40's. He gets to take his son, Jack, home after Jack has gone into remission. He's always charming, and his penchant for explicit language is usually delivered with a David Addison flair. Most of what he says is a throw away to make others laugh and hide his own insecurities.

THIS ROLE IS COMPLICATED: I will entertain reworking this role for a man or woman, to fit their own unique ethnicity/cultural background. Meaning, if you're a woman who fits the age, please submit or if you're any other ethnicity or African American but can't do this accent, please submit.

JEAN B - a French Haitian man in his 50's, proprietor/owner of After Hours, usually a popular place to seek solace or a good laugh from the stress of the hospital cancer ward.

SHOW DATES:
Currently the show is running Nov. 15-Dec. 15 but that may be pushed one week to Nov. 22 to Dec. 22. Yes, we will have shows over Thanksgiving weekend. (TBD based on cast avail)

Auditions for TAAC for Kimberly Akimbo
Auditions for Kimberly Akimbo at TAAC
Directed by Cameron Rose
Written by David Lindsay-Abaire
THE PLAY: The play follows the story of Kimberly Akimbo, a young girl with a rare condition which causes her body to age rapidly. On Kim's 16th birthday, all of the delicate strands holding her life together snap. As she blunders through family turmoil, buried secrets, and first love, Kim must find the strength to love in a world that wants to keep her down.
Set in cold, suburban Bogota, New Jersey, KIMBERLY AKIMBO is a quirky and heartrending play about love, loss, dysfunction, and the persistence of hope.
THE CHARACTERS:
KIMBERLY: older woman, playing a 16 year-old [this role has been precast]
BUDDY: a man in his mid-30s, Kimberly's dad. Rarely sober, quiet, but trying to do well by his family. Incredibly sincere and hardworking; he carries the weight of the world.
PATTIE: a very pregnant woman in her mid-30s, Buddy's wife. Sweet, stubborn, and completely oblivious.
JEFF: an awkward, unpopular 16-year-old boy. Incredibly honest and caring. He's a master at D&D.
DEBRA: a woman in her early 30s, an ex-con, Pattie's sister. Definitely the yin to Pattie's yang. While they are complete opposites, their sisterly loyalty never waivers.

THE AUDITION:
Actors should dress comfortably. Movement will be required. No high heels or dresses, please. Please come prepared with a headshot and resume. Sides will be provided at the audition. If you would like a PDF of the show before auditions, please email David at david@taactheatre.com

Auditions for TAAC for Angels in America
Angels in America:
A Gay Fantasia on National Themes
is a 1993 Pulitzer Prize-winning play in two parts by American playwright Tony Kushner. The two parts of the play are separately presentable and entitled Millennium Approaches and Perestroika.
God has abandoned Heaven.
Auditions are September 1st at 7PM at The Blue Box Theater.
Set in New York City in 1985, the play opens with Louis Ironson, a neurotic gay Jew, learning that his lover, WASP Prior Walter, has AIDS. As the play and Prior's illness progress, Louis becomes unable to cope with the emotional stress and moves out. Meanwhile, closeted homosexual Mormon and Republican law clerk Joe Pitt is offered a major promotion by his mentor, the McCarthyist lawyer Roy Cohn. Joe doesn't immediately take the job because he feels he has to check with his Valium-addicted, agoraphobic wife, Harper, who is unwilling to move. Roy is himself deeply closeted, and soon discovers that he has AIDS.

Prior Walter - A gay man with AIDS. Throughout the play, he experiences various heavenly visions. When the play begins, he is dating Louis Ironson. His best friend is a nurse named Belize. (This role has been pre-cast)
Louis Ironson - Prior's boyfriend. Unable to deal with Prior's disease, he ultimately abandons him. He meets Joe Pitt and later begins a relationship with him.
Harper Pitt - A neurotic Mormon housewife with incessant Valium-induced hallucinations. After a revelation from Prior (whom she meets when his heavenly vision and her hallucination cross paths), she discovers that her husband is gay and struggles with it, considering it a betrayal of her marriage.
Joe Pitt - Harper's husband and a deeply closeted gay Mormon, clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, and friend of Roy Cohn. Joe eventually abandons his wife for a relationship with Louis. Throughout the play, he struggles with his sexual identity.
Roy Cohn - A closeted gay lawyer, based on real life Roy Cohn. Just as in history, it is eventually revealed that he has contracted HIV and the disease has progressed to AIDS, which he insists is liver cancer to preserve his reputation.
Ethel Rosenberg - The ghost of a woman executed for being a Communist spy, based on the real life Ethel Rosenberg. She visits Roy, whom she blames for her conviction and execution.
Hannah Pitt - Joe's mother. She moves to New York after her son drunkenly comes out to her on the phone. She arrives to find that Joe has abandoned his wife.
Belize - A former drag queen, he is Prior's ex-boyfriend and best friend. He later becomes Roy Cohn's nurse.
The Voice-Angel - A messenger from Heaven who visits Prior and tells him he's a prophet.
Auditions are September 1st at 7PM at The Blue Box Theater.
PART ONE runs December 12th-21st

Playwrights Collaborative Meets at California Stage

September 8 PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING AT THE CALIFORNIA STAGE THEATRE:

At the Sunday, September 8, Playwrights Collaborative Meeting (7:00 PM) we will read and discuss Letha Dawson's "Love Five." When little Jorge, a 16-year-old, is invited to play in a tournament in which the winners will be awarded college scholarships, he is undecided whether to enter. His father, an undocumented immigrant, has broken the law. Little Jorge must decide: support his family or enter the competition. We will also read Letha's 10 minute short "A Night in the Middle East."

This workshop is at the California Stage Theatre, 2509 "R" Street (on "R" Street between 25th and 26th Streets), Sacramento.

The Playwrights Collaborative thanks the California Stage Theater Company for the use of its theater.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267) .

Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights.

"The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere.  Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed."

WORKSHOPS: At each workshop,  original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production.  Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area.  There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.

STAGED READINGS:  Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production.  A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.

Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works.  The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers.  Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.

For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267) .
