CHASING THE PLAINS

VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Presented by Texas Tech University

Middle America is an area of the U.S. seldom considered for two-wheeled or four-wheeled adventure. However, America's Heartland is home to an incredible amount of biodiversity, history, and adventure. So much so that Dr. Jerod Foster of Texas Tech University in Lubbock spent over six years pouring over satellite imagery, scouting remote roads on his bicycle, and collaborating with gravel cyclists from Oklahoma through North Dakota (and each state in between) to connect a vast network of bicycle-friendly roads. His effort led to the creation of the Great Plains Gravel Route, a 3,500 mile route from Texas' border with Mexico all the way to Canada, much of which is completely off-pavement.

In this episode of our Video of the Week, “The Great Plains Project,” is the focus. Designed as a six-part docuseries for Texas Tech Public Media, this film captures the essence of engaging students at the University into field work that navigates dirt, gravel and paved backroads along the Great Plains. It's a film we think you'll thoroughly enjoy that captures the essence of camaraderie and exploration.

IN THE FIELD WITH LIVSN

Exploring outdoors with quality, comfortable clothing to enhance the experience

by Travis Monroe

I discovered the poorly kept secret that is Livsn Designs at a 2022 event in the Ozarks, not far from their headquarters in Bentonville, AR. After trying on a pair of the Flex Canvas Pants (reviewed in issue 48) I was an immediate fan. I wore them home and every day for the next week, my wife eventually telling me I had to buy a second pair in a different color. I did…and a pair of shorts.

FIELD REVIEW: TOYO TIRES OPEN COUNTRY R/T

Traction to keep you grounded for your four-wheeled adventures

by Bret Edge

Tires aren’t the most exciting equipment on an overland rig, but they are one of the most important. Quality tires offer peace of mind in the backcountry, where having traction and durability can mean the difference between an adventurous outing…and a disastrous one. Over the years I’ve used a variety of tires on a variety of rigs, almost all from well-known manufacturers. I’ve always had good luck with Toyo tires. The Open Country R/T’s I had on my F250 were due for replacement when I was offered the opportunity to test and review Toyo’s Open Country R/T Trail. The R/T and R/T Trail have completely different tread patterns, but both are designed to be a hybrid between a mud and all-terrain tire. The R/T Trail tread is less aggressive, and the tire is designed to perform better on-road while maintaining the same off-road capability. Is it marketing jargon, or do these tires live up to the hype?

TRANS-AFRICA OVERLANDING

Alex Brown of Advanture Magazine, in collaboration with our friends at Front Runner Dometic, discover the rawness of exploring in Africa

Mary Hannah and Andy, the couple behind Expedition Rove, sat around burning logs on a campfire, somewhere on the side of a mountain in Columbia, when something sparked within. While half-way down the Pan-American highway on their first long roadtrip, the desire for an even bigger, more remote and challenging journey had just ignited.

While the trip from the USA to Argentina had set them off in the right direction, the idea for a more raw adventure became a daily conversation. As a former British Paratrooper, stationed in California maintaining Land Rovers, Andy returned from crossing the Bolivian salt flats hastily presenting Mary Hannah with a possible solution to their next adventure.
