Meet the new class!
Our Leadership Chattooga 2026 class met for orientation in January. This is the first class to start off in the Hurley Community Development Center. We have a baker's dozen this year and couldn't be more excited to nearly fill the room
| | Pictured (l-r, front)---Candy Mickler (Family Resource Agency of North GA), Deseri Murphy (Murphy Chiropractic), Davia Weatherill (Paradise Garden Foundation), Anna Elrod (Summerville Housing Authority), Anna Durham (Chattooga High School), Diane Vinyard-trainer, Living Life On Target, Courtney Simpson (GP Federal Credit Union) ( l-r, back) Scott Lewis (Atrium Health Floyd EMS), William Barley (Mount Vernon Mills), Trey Skelton (City of Summerville Fire Dept), Matt Harris (Northwest Georgia JDA), Adam Wilson (City of Summerville Rec Dept), Jason Burrage (Chattooga Co Sheriff's Office) | | |
We are blessed to have two stellar leadership trainers in Chattooga County, and we have been calling on them to conduct our orientation, a communication session, and an in-depth leadership development session. Pictured above is Diane Vinyard with Living Life On Target, one of our program sponsors, leads the morning session on getting to know each other and developing key skills in starting those conversations. Heather Casey with LeadStrong414 takes the afternoon session to dive deep into their DISC assessments, which they take when accepted into the class.
The first day is always the best---getting to know each other and establishing life-long connections.

LCSE26---Tourism Day!
Dress down day. It was a cold one, so maybe we should have specified down feathers....brrrrrr! We started the morning off taking a hike around the lower lake at Sloppy Floyd State Park. After Park Manager Katie Gramling warmed us up with a fire she built, Assistant Park Manager Amber Payne led us on a educational and brisk walk around the lake. We made some stops to talk and snap a picture. I was so impressed that Katie had arranged for a herring to greet us when we got back to the park office.
She really didn't, but it was SO COOL!!!! (see the picture below)
| | | | When we returned to town, we caught up with Susan Locklear, Main Street Director, who took us on a brrrrisk tour of downtown Summerville. We popped in the depot and trekked the tracks to the turntable, passing the Couey House. We crossed the footbridge to end up in the business district. | From there we stopped in the post office to see the "New Deal" era mural on the wall. Afterwards we braced against the north wind and learned more about historic places on Commerce before we ducked into Dos Maguey's for lunch and warmth. | | | | We ended the day in Paradise....Howard Finster's Paradise Garden that is. Mary Shewan, Operations Manager, toured us through the newly-renovated World's Folk Art Church. Then, we were left to explore on our own. So awesome that Koi found his missing shoe!!! | | Next week we'll be travelling to Atlanta for a big day: State Capitol, lunch at the Sloppy Floyd Building AKA "Twin Towers" , and then to the High Museum connecting Howard Finster's Paradise Garden to his worldly influence. Stay tuned for details in the March newsletter! | | |
Chattooga FLEX Fab Five
The Fab Five student entrepreneur companies enjoyed diving deep into brand with brand designer Blake Tannery of BravoCharlieTango. They also went on a field trip to Atlanta, coordinated and sponsored by Georgia FLEX. It's a busy time as we prepare for Round 2 judging which will narrow the field to our Top 3.
| | Blake Tannery with BravoCharlieTango led the student companies in a workshop on determining their target market, developing their story, and creating their brand. | | |
Georgia FLEX invited our group to Atlanta for an all-day field trip to AmericasMart and the State Capitol. Students participated in a Capitol tour, heard from guest speakers and attended a networking lunch.
We are so grateful to Georgia FLEX, our sponsors, our trainers, and the Chattooga community for helping to launch this inaugural program. Visit our site

We have moved to the Hurley Community Development Center (HCDC), and we couldn't be more thrilled to offer more services to businesses: Shared Workspaces, Training Center, Private Meeting Spaces.
PLUS, the Welcome Center will be more centrally located for greater impact & reach.
All this would not be possible without the collaboration between private (Southeast First National Bank and the Hurley Family), public (Chattooga County), and a non-profit (Chattooga Chamber).

SUPPORT THE ARTS!
The Tooga will once again be a performing arts venue and centerpiece in downtown Summerville. Until that time, please support the local arts in our schools, in our events, in our art environments and everywhere that is Chattooga.
A world without arts is a world without creative thoughts, chosen words, inspiring visuals and magnificent sounds.
