Welcome to this issue of the Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce Newsletter!  This newsletter goes out to more than 2000 individual emails and is posted on our  facebook page  each week. It is designed to keep you informed of the latest info from your local Chamber of Commerce. Feel free to forward this newsletter to someone who should be a member or is interested in information about what is going on in the Cheboygan Area. April Business After Hours
with a Michigan Top 50 Business to Watch

Join us for a Tailgate Business After Hours.  Thursday April 18th from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Cheboygan Brewing Company.  This month's After Hours is being hosted by 
Cheboygan Brewing Company.  Come help them celebrate being named one of the Top 50 Companies in Michigan to Watch!   Cost is $5 for Chamber Members and $10 for those who are not yet Chamber Members.

Inland Lakes Snowmobile Club - Member of the Month

Beginning this month, we have started a new program at the Chamber. We are randomly selecting one business or organization per month to be featured as our member of the month. Cheboygan Announced for Select Level of the  Michigan Main Street Program

LANSING, Mich. - The cities of Cheboygan and Eaton Rapids have been selected by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to take part in the Select Level of the Michigan Main Street program, MEDC announced today (March 18th).

As part of the Select Level of Michigan Main Street, these two communities will receive five years of intensive technical assistance from MEDC with a focus on revitalization strategies designed to attract new residents, business investments, economic growth and job creation to their central business districts.
"I'm excited to see how these two communities will grow within the next five years," said MEDC CEO Jeff Mason. "With the support of the Main Street program and the MEDC, I believe we can positively transform the downtowns and commercial districts in communities to ensure their place on Michigan's path toward our future."

     North Central Michigan College alumna, Kelly Suter (2008), will be honored by the American Association of Community Colleges as an Outstanding Community College Alumni on April 16 at the AACC's Annual Convention in Orlando. She and her two co-recipients are being recognized for the positive impact they have made on their communities, the nation and the world.

            Kelly Suteris a 2008 graduate of the North Central Michigan College nursing program-one of 15 nurses in her immediate family to have attended the college. She continued her education, earning a master's degree in 2017. She's also earned considerable experience as an emergency department nurse and has also worked as an emergency response nurse for International Medical Corps for the past eight years.

Hosts Needle Drop-offs in CHEBOYGAN, GAYLORD, PETOSKEY

McLaren Northern Michigan is hosting free needle drop-offs in April in Cheboygan, Gaylord, and Petoskey. 

Inaugural Artists Selected For
Mackinac Island Artist-in-Residence Program

Mackinac State Historic Parks is pleased to announce the inaugural artists selected for the Mackinac Island Artist-in-Residence program, which will be housed in the newly remodeled second floor of the Mackinac Island Visitor's Center, formerly the 1915 Mackinac Island Coast Guard Station.
The Mackinac State Historic Parks Artist-In-Residence Program is designed to promote and encourage the creation of artistic works inspired by the history, natural wonders, and beauty of Mackinac Island. The two- and three-week residencies will begin in early June and continue through early October.
The selected artist will provide two public presentations (workshop, lecture, reading, demonstration, etc.) during their residencies and contribute one piece of their work to Mackinac State Historic Parks within 12 months.

McLaren Northern Michigan officials announced today (March 21) the appointment of Todd Burch to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Burch brings more than 16 years of executive leadership experience within hospitals, health systems, and managed care organizations.

Michigan Works! Job Fairs

This April Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium will be hosting four job fairs across northeast Michigan. Michigan Works! Job Fairs are the largest multi-employer job fairs in the region, with over 150 area employers expected to participate and hundreds of jobs available. Job seekers can expect full-time, part-time, and seasonal openings.

Job fair dates, times and locations are as follows:

GAYLORD: Saturday, April 6th, 11am-1pm at the Gaylord Intermediate Schools gymnasium, 240 E 4th St

MACKINAW CITY: Saturday, April 13th, 11am-1pm at the Mackinaw City Recreation Center, 503 W Central Ave

GRAYLING: Tuesday, April 16th, 3pm-5pm at the Grayling Ramada Inn, 2650 I-75 Business Loop

ALPENA: Tuesday, April 23rd, 3pm-5pm at the Alpena Community College Park Arena, 665 Johnson St.

Earth Week Plus Expo

The Trails Council will be represented on Saturday, April 13 at Cheboygan High School Stop at the tent by the Expo entry door to find out about the amazing variety of trails in Cheboygan County. Bring your bike to one of three Bike Maintenance Clinics (at 11:00, 12:00, or 1:00), or simply attend and learn more about the basics of maintaining a bicycle. Jim Conboy and Bill Prall will be on hand to answer your questions about cycling, bike touring, bike maintenance, and everything trail-related. Expo hours are 10 am to 1:45 pm.

Awakon Federal Credit Union Will Begin Renovation Project For Onaway Office

Awakon Federal Credit Union will begin renovation construction on their Onaway Office in early April. The credit union plans to create a more enjoyable and convenient experience for Awakon members with an updated, comfortable and welcoming design. Awakon will add functionality to their member engagement with integrated technology.
Entry into the Credit Union will be relocated from the front entrance to a temporary entrance in the back of the building, north of the drive thru. The drive thru is expected to be functional throughout the majority of the renovation process, with only limited closures. Awakon will continue to offer full services for its members during this project.
Scott Pauly, President/CEO of Awakon Federal Credit Union stated, "This project demonstrates our commitment to the safety and security of both our staff and members of the Onaway community. Combining the Credit Union Philosophy of "People Helping People", with an increased member friendly experience is a key aspect to the continued success of Awakon Federal Credit Union."
Awakon Federal Credit Union's expects construction to be complete by mid-summer.

New Fishing Access Coming to Downtown Cheboygan

Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council is pleased to be working with the City of Cheboygan to design and engineer additional fishing access along the Cheboygan River. Thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust's "Access to the Great Lakes Fishery" program, the Watershed Council will provide public engagement and pay for design and engineering as phase one of the project.   Key partners here to read the full press release.

Encore Financial Group introduces charitable giving initiative

Encore Financial Group, a financial services firm in Northern Michigan, announced a charitable giving program called "Encore for Gifting." The program is designed to benefit local charities nominated by community members and chosen by a panel of Encore representatives, staff, and clients. Four times per calendar year, four different 501(c)(3) entities will be awarded $1,000.  Click here for more information and how to apply.
